Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Apud Petrum vander Eyk et Cornelium de Pecker, 1757. 8vo, pp. [xiv], 478, [2], 479-936, [48]. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink. Spotted and toned in places, a small wormtrack in lower margin at beginning. Vellum a little soiled, spine slightly darkened. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Gaisford, Dean of Christ Church, to front pastedown, his ownership inscription and a further note on the author to endpapers, a couple of marginal annotations. The primary work of the Byzantine grammarian Thomas Magister (c.1270-1346), a roughly alphabetical gathering of Attic Greek words and phrases to aid in composition, in a variorium edition by the physician and philologist Johann Stephen Bernard (1718-1793). Bernard based his work on the text established by Nikolaas Blanckaert (1624-1703), professor at Franeker.

London: Printed for T. Cadell [et al.], 1822. 8vo, pp. xxxii, 285, [3]. Contemporary marbled sheep, spine divided by gilt rules, red morocco label. A little soiled and spotted, one leaf torn touching text without loss. Somewhat rubbed, some wear to extremities, front hinge starting. Binder’s ticket of B. Scott of Carlisle and traces of erased inscription to pastedown. A reprint of lexicographer, elocutionist and erstwhile actor John Walker’s (1732-1807) pronunciation guide, first published in 1798.

Northridge, California: Lord John Press, 1982. FIRST EDITION, NO. 109 OF 300 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, oblong small folio, pp. [vi], 2, [ii], 3-49, [3]. Original cream boards printed in black and red backed in black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black cloth slipcase. A touch of rubbing to slipcase, else fine. Signed by the author to a special fly-title inserted after the first leaf of text, numbered in ink to the limitation-page to rear. A collection of poetry and artwork by Nobel Laureate Grass, the poems presented in facing-page translations by Michael Hamburger. This is one of the 300 standard copies, 50 deluxe copies were also issued in quarter red cloth. We have not been able to trace another copy with the slipcase, which was clearly made for the book.

Bound between cloth-covered boards with endpapers of embossed Fabriano Rosapina Avorio paper (285gsm), with a paper wrap-around band printed in black. Housed in a custom cloth drop-back box blocked in silver together with a full-colour 12pp. booklet about the book and containing a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by the artist. A wordless retelling of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ using a combination of old and new technologies: intaglio printmaking and laser cutting. Edinburgh: M. MacDonald, 1965. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. 24, [2]. Original cream card wrappers printed in red and black, pale yellow dustjacket printed in red and black. Dustjacket just a touch soiled, a little bumped to top edge. Inscribed by the author to flyleaf: ‘To my good Robin, fount of mercies, from Sydney at Christmas 1965, with love’. Sydney Goodsir Smith’s poem was written for broadcast by the BBC in 1964. This is its first appearance in book form, and this copy is warmly inscribed to BBC editor Robin Richardson.
