Description:
Half-title: La navigation, poëme en six chants, avec des notes historiques et géographiques. A Paris : Chez Giguet et Michaud, 1806. Second edition. Octavo, fine contemporary full speckled calf with gilt borders, spine with gilt decoration and brown morocco label with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, engraved frontispiece (arrival of Cleopatra at Tarsus), xiv, 412 pp, [1] engraved plate (the shipwreck of La Pérouse), internally crisp and sound with sparse foxing. A poem divided into six chants, or cantos, written in the style of a Classical epic, which eulogises the great navigators throughout history. Each canto is followed by an extensive section of notes which explain the allusions made in the poetry. The sixth canto is largely dedicated to the voyage and imagined fate of La Pérouse. Note that this edition is structured differently to the first edition of 1805, which was divided into eight cantos. Copies of the second edition are recorded in three Australian collections (National Library of… Read More

[Liverpool] : [E. and W. Smith, Printers, Pool-Lane], [1809]. A very good copy. Playbill, single sheet (285 x 190 mm), advertising a performance of 'The Exile' at the Theatre-Royal, Liverpool, on Thursday September 14th, 1809, and giving notice of a forthcoming performance of 'The Pantomime De la Perouse' the following evening, Friday September 15th, 1809, with Miss Adams as Madam Perouse and Miss H. Adams as Umba. A relatively early example of a playbill for this stage work, productions of which are recorded from 1801 onwards. An earlier play about La Perouse by the German playwright Kotzebue had been published in 1798, in which La Perouse is depicted as the only survivor of his shipwreck, living with an empathetic native woman on a deserted island until Madame La Perouse and his son discover him. The native woman and Madame La Perouse end up co-habiting on the island, with La Perouse becoming something of a brother to them. Although this story clearly inspired Fawcett, his version of the tragedy had… Read More

Description:
Donnée à Paris, le 4 Mai 1791. Melun [Département de Seine et Marne] : Tarbé, 1791. Quarto, 4pp, letterpress, stitch-bound with a number of other pieces of legislation from the period, without further binding; in crisp, fine condition. This decree by the Assemblée Nationale is the official order to bring forth all documents and manuscripts relating to La Pérouse, missing since his departure from ‘Botanibay’ at the beginning of 1788. It follows on from an earlier decree of February 1791, in which the loss of La Pérouse was first officially acknowledged. The great navigator La Pérouse had seemed destined to rival the achievements of Cook, and to reassert France’s position as the pre-eminent colonial power in the South Seas. It was not to be, the explorer vanishing without trace in the Western Pacific, his last contact being with the barely ashore English settlers of Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet at Port Jackson. The present decree rules that all pertinent manuscripts, papers and… Read More

Description:
[Paris] : s.n., 1790. Octavo, modern marbled wrappers; 86 pp, engraved head-piece; a fine copy. Attributed to N. Bergasse and to A.M.J. Chasténet, marquis de Puysegur, this satirical play counts amongst its main characters the French explorer La Pérouse and his ""Indian"" (i.e. Polynesian) servant, O Paria. The other characters, all important figures in the French Revolution, have their names thinly disguised, but they include Mirabeau, Lafayette, Bailly and Montmorency. The ships of La Pérouse's expedition left Port Jackson in early March, 1788. This was presumably their last contact with Europeans. La Pérouse's last letter, dispatched from Sydney on the British ship Alexander, informed the French authorities that he expected to return to France by June 1789. However, the expedition of d'Entrecasteaux in search of La Pérouse did not depart France until the end of September 1791. During 1790, the year in which La journée des dupes was written, performed and published, nothing of the fate… Read More

avec une préface par Ferdinand de Lesseps. Paris : Maurice Dreyfous, [ca.1860]. Octavo (190 x 120 mm), pictorial gilt red cloth boards (fine and bright), all edges gilt; 248 pp, illustrated with 11 engravings; third plate (Kamtschatka volcano) has a 40 mm tear at fore-edge, occasional light foxing, but an excellent example. Scarce. Jean-Baptiste Barthélemy de Lesseps (1766-1834) was an officer on the Astrolabe, one of the two ships in the ill-fated scientific expedition of La Pérouse. Having sailed across the Pacific, visiting Easter Island, the Sandwich Islands, Alaska, California, Manila and Macao, the expedition arrived in Kamchatka (the easternmost outpost of Russian colonisation) in September 1787, in order to replenish supplies. De Lesseps was selected by La Pérouse to return overland from there to Europe, carrying with him all the highly-sensitive reports and charts of the expedition up to this point, which La Pérouse was determined should reach French authorities as soon as possible. Description:
London : Dean & Son, c. 1860. ""Papa Lovechild's series"". Octavo, illustrated wrappers, short split to bottom of spine; pp. 8, printed on one side only, full-page illustrations throughout, with original hand colouring; a very good to fine copy. To modern sensibilities - and probably for children of the time - this morality tale about the potential consequences for a child who decides to play truant from school one day is quite terrifying. An innocent young hare falls in with a band of criminal foxes and ends up taking the rap for their poaching activities. Caught seemingly red-handed in the foxes' hideout, he is given no opportunity to protest his innocence, nor does the ""ape judge"" show him any compassion or leniency. His sentence? Death by hanging. Yes, that's the way the story ends - poor Bunny is led to the gibbet by the ""ox hangman"", and is executed. This early reader speaks volumes about the moral climate of Dickensian Britain, its intractable justice system and the harshness of its penal code.

Mr. Fearon continues precisely as heretofore, his varied and extensive Wine business, for consumption both Wholesale and Retail. All the Entrances are in the Court. London : Henry B. Fearon, [c.1836]. Broadside, 255 x 200 mm, on paper watermarked with the date 1836, printed recto only; faint old fold lines and light creasing, otherwise very good. In 1831 London's first Gin Palace was built at 94, Holborn Hill, for the licensed victuallers Thompson and Fearon. It was designed by the architect John Papworth, with a spectacular interior by Stephen Geary that was to influence the many similar London establishments that followed in its wake. This broadside dates to the early years of the business, evidently soon after Fearon had become the sole owner.
