Description:
Moscow, Tennessee, 1895. W.S. Bell. Large Archive of Stereoviews of Hunting Dogs, Circa 1895 Moscow, Tennessee (380 Images) W.S. Bell. 380 stereoviews on curved tan, cream or grey mounts. Generally, in very good condition. Typical edge wear to mounts. 22 cards have annotations on verso; rest are blank. These likely are amateur photos and the photo quality reflects this with a variety of exposures and some movement captured. Considering the circumstances of field photography, often in dense brush during hunts, the images are quite remarkable. We know little about W.S. Bell but luckily he left an amazing archive of photographs of late 19th--early 20th century hunting dogs in and around the small town of Moscow, Tennessee. According to the Amercian Kennel Club, the five most popular breeds of dogs in 1890 were working gundog breeds. While we are not experts in dog identification, the majority of dogs in these photos are probably English Setters and Pointers--both species in the top five of popularity… Read More

William Doxey. Lark, The--Issues 1-24 plus the Epi-Lark, 1895-1897, William Doxey, San Francisco. 5.5 x 7.5 inches. Various paginations. Complete run of The Lark including the Epi-Lark. Overall, better than average condition for these fragile single issues. Typical chipping, especially to wrappers and fore edge. Light toning to paper as common. Several pages found uncut. Good Condition. In a latter-day brick colored slipcase with leather stamped title on spine. Rare run of the single issues of the well-known San Francisco humor magazine founded in 1895 by Gelett Burgess and William Doxey. These fragile little booklets most often are found bound in two volumes. Volume 1, number 1 appeared May 1, 1895, with the famous couplet by Burgess: I never saw a purple cow I never hope to see one; But I can tell you, anyhow, I'd rather see than be one! The little literary magazine gained popularity and soon reached a circulation of 3,000 but quickly lost steam and published their last volume in April of… Read More

Description:
[Late 18th Century Connecticut State Tax Collectors] Collection of 16 Manuscript Documents Codifying "Collector of State Taxes" for 1790-91 Connecticut Towns. Various sizes. Generally good condition. Mostly written on scraps of laid paper (several with partial watermarks) variously showing at least one rough edge plus chips or light moisture damage to edge. Good Condition. Small archival collection of formal notifications to the Connecticut State Treasurer of who was elected to be official collector of state taxes for 16 Connecticut towns. Included are: Wethersfield, Haddam, Glastonbury, Pomfret, Windham, Somers, Lisbon, Hartford, Mansfield, Hebron, Stafford, Hartland, Stratford, Killingly, Stamford, Winchester, and Canaan. All in manuscript with town clerk signatures, the name of the collector, the date of the town meeting plus docketing on verso. I imagine the position of tax collector was not favored by many. A nice little collection from the annals of Connecticut history from 1790-91.

[Leadville, Colorado] [Baby Doe Tabor] Archive of Letters, Notes, Clippings, Paperwork, Scraps and Ephemera from Horace Tabor and Baby Doe Tabor. Collection all in protective sleeves. Most of the material has been well preserved and remains in very good condition. Many of Baby Does handwritten notes were written on scraps, old calendars or envelopes and the condition reflects this. Her writing can be a little difficult to read but most of the longer notes have been transcribed. Overall, very good condition. Horace Austin Warner "Haw" Tabor (1833-1899), also known as "The Bonanza King of Leadville" arrived in Colorado in April 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. He was accompanied by his first wife, Augusta, and their son, Nathaniel. In 1860, he tried prospecting at California Gulch in Oro City, the area that would eventually become Leadville. But after those prospects were not successful, he relocated to Park County, settling in Laurette. There, they operated a store and Horace served as the… Read More

Japan, 1890. Very Good. Lot of 2 Suzuki Mannen Woodblock Prints, Suzuki Mannen, Japan, 1890s, 4.5 x 7 inches, 1 pp each. Two woodblock prints with black and red ink; paper is moderately toned but in excellent condition, with no apparent edge wear or creasing; each print mounted to white paper mat, but appear easy to remove with no or very little damage; very good condition. I was unable to find much information online about the artist, Suzuki Mannen (or Mannen Suzuki); they appear to have been a late 19th century Japanese artist, creating ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Ukiyo-e translates as "picture[s] of the floating world"; it was a Japanese art genre popular in the 17th through the 19th centuries, and oft-depicted subjects included kabuki theater actors, beautiful women, and sumo wrestlers.
