This book was a finalist for the 1973 National Book Award in Science. "The first comprehensive book on the ecology of the alpine tundra of the United States," all of that tundra found in the West apart from New Hampshire's White Mountains, mainly in the Rockies, the Sierra, and the Cascades (the illustrated endpapers show a map of it throughout the country, which is a nice touch). Not a guidebook in the conventional sense, as Zwinger provides a graceful narrative descriptions that flow seamlessly. With 230 pencil line drawings by Zwinger, especially of alpine flowers, and a full-color photo insert. Sullivan was known as the "dean of science writers" and was the science editor for The New York Times. This book tells of the deep-time geological formation of the North America, including continental drift and rift, ice ages and mega floods, but it also explores "Man's impact on the landscape--sometimes beneficial, sometimes destructive." A small quarto or large octavo in gray paper boards with a red cloth spine. Black and white photos and illustrations throughout. Near fine on account of bumped lower corners; in a very good jacket with a few short tears to edges, corner wear, and some scratching to rear panel. Though Sullivan was a popular writer, arguably the predecessor to John McPhee, his books seem uncommon signed--a nice find.

Also inscribed by Stiles to Donald Hall, our one-time Poet Laureate: "For Don Hall, gratefully, MBS." Brown thick paper covers with flaps held by Japanese stab style binding. The interior is Mowhawk letterpress paper. Printed ny Gray Zeitz of the Larkspur Press. It contains two stories, "Hunktown" by Mason, and "Winter Love Story" by Stiles, which won an inaugural short story competition put on by the Commission and was thus honored by being paired with the Mason story. As the forward by Nash Cox explains, "This chapbook reveals two very different worlds within contemporary Kentuckya small western Kentucky farm and a modest thoroughbred horse breeding operation near Lexington. Conway has traced his hand on the front free end paper and drawn a heart in the middle (on the palm, as it were) with an "E" at its center, presumable for Eustace (but resonantly also standing for Elizabeth). Schweiger, the President of the National Wildlife Federation, writes on the title page: "Georgini-- Best wishes in your environmental career. We need your leadership. Larry Schweiger." Roosevelt, on the opposite page, adds: "Georgini, You know more about climate change that I do. Keep up the great work you are doing. Warm personal regards, Theodore Roosevelt IV." Roosevelt is an investment banker who has carried on the conservation-minded legacy of his great grandfather as the chair of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions and a member of the Governing Council of The Wilderness Society among other roles. Notable for laid in materials: Two typed letters signed (TLS) by Laurance Rockefeller from Fifth Avenue sending thanks (and unexpected compensation) to one Elizabeth Enos for her part in organizing a "set-up" or archive related to his collection of photographs (the second is mainly in reply to birthday greetings). A third TLS from his assistant, Ruth Haupert, is dated 2004 and shares of Rockefeller's death; it details about how she came to work for Rockefeller and her plans now that he's gone, and has more the feel fo a general life update. As the book narrates, Laurance Rockefeller was a notable conservationist (Lady Bird Johnson in 1967 labeled him "America's leading conservationist"). Clinch was an important alpinist and conservationist, serving as president of the American Alpine Club (1968-70) and as the longtime executive director of the Sierra Club Foundation (1970-1981). He is the only American to have led (in 1958) a first ascent of an 8,000 meter peak, Hidden Peak in Northeast Pakistan, the world's 11th tallest mountain; and among many other accomplishments he also led the expedition that made first ascent of the highest peak in Antartica, Mount Vinson. Clinch Peak in Antartica was named after him in 2006. After leaving his role with the Sierra Club, he went on to direct the Environmental Law Institute, and he was one of the earliest board members of REI.
