Description:
No Publisher Stated. Very Good. 1943. Broadside. The leaf has been trimmed by hand, inexpertly, and only the tail edge is truly parallel to the printed text. Very faint offsetting from an adjacent object. The leaf is lightly tanned at the very edge of the tail.; This is transcript of a radio address delivered by Carl Sandburg on the Hour of Charm program on NBC radio, sponsored by General Electric. The primarily- musical program also allotted time for opinion pieces on culture and world affairs. During World War II, the world affairs topics turned to the rise of fascism, the European theater of war, the declaration of war by Japan, the Chicago Tribune headline "Our Country, Right or Wrong," and the program reinforced that patriotism was a civic obligation. This topical atmosphere was fertile ground for 'Americanist' Carl Sandburg's observations about the country in time of war. In this address, Sandburg pays tribute to the interred "unknown soldier," the… Read More

Description:
France. Fine. 1984. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. The tiniest crease to the creature's tiny toe on one leaf.; A miniature, artist's book, written and designed by French artist Noël Marsault. In polychrome illustrated, thin pasteboards die cut in the shape of a whimsical, imaginary creature lifting one back leg, presumably to urinate. Marsault's drawings and prints are varied, and a somewhat-similar creature has appeared in one of his drawings. The text is in French, and the page design incorporates Marsault's typical chaotic layout of varying point sizes in the same line, lines chaotically placed on the page, and ambiguity as to the structure of a given sentence. Here is the opening sentence, printed in 3 consecutive pages: "Je deviens empire et songes à // la spirale à ressort la gorge de // dénouée dans celuiqui attend." This is copy 27 of an unstated edition, but believed to be limited to 30. Unpaginated, but 17 pages including an endpaper and limitation page. The text is in an unstated… Read More

Description:
Toronto, ON: House of Anansi Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2001. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Tiny, closed tear to the publisher's paper band.; Thirty, tiny, quirky essays from this frequent contributor to McSweeny's. The essays span a mermaid in a jar, newly created fairy tales, a frog that gives relationship advice to a plumber, love, bad love, sex, “the littlest dumpling who had never been told his name,” and many that are depressive and matter of fact without making an obvious point or having a moral resolution. Sheila Heti's writing is unique. Five essays are reprinted from McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, Issue 4. The author has signed "love Sheila" in pen on the title page with a hand-drawn potted plant, "April 2003.", and the inscription "for a man with flowers and ties[?]. Includes ephemera: two stiff, paper hang tags. Each has a different, halftone, monochrome reproduction of do-it-yourself photo booth picture of… Read More

Description:
London: The Golden Cockerel Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 1961. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Ostensibly about cats and their ways, this 1727 work is also a witty satire that mocks people and their ways, various strata of society, and exacting scholarship. The prose and verse are fluid with feline and human characteristics ascribed interchangeably. Contemporary criticism treated 'Les Chats' as frivolous because of its subject and it was long a target of public and artistic ridicule. Contemporaries were seemingly too busy mocking Les Chats to identify the satire buried just below the surface. The author was a thoughtful, tasteful, artistic man of his time, ultimately being admitted to Académie Française. Written as 11 Letters and 10 Poems, although the letters themselves contain some additional poems and fragments. After that are extensive Notes and an Index of Subjects, both infused with satire and essential components of the entire work. Copy 211 of a limited edition of 400. Although a signature… Read More
