First Edition? Unrecorded. By the prolific author of Pigs Is Pigs. This short story is known only as it was published in the periodical, Pictorial Review, drawings by John R. Neill, April, 1921. The text is made to appear as if printed from a manuscript. An odd story about a fairy by the name of Faletta who visits John Cudd when he is five years, seven months, and four days old, and in school, and stays with him until he is 42, when he kills her despite the happiness she had brought him. Edw[ar]d Wall Roos, Commonly called the Man of Ross's House. Fine late 18th century intaglio printed trade card on thick paper, 3 x 4 ¾", title surmounted with royal arms. N.p., n.d., ca. 1780. Flanking the legend are two men holding rifles, hunting dogs at their side, a dead rabbit and two dead birds at the feet of one of them. Under the legend is a coach-and-four racing past a sign reading "122 to Lond[on]", under which is "Post Chaises &c." In the distance on the left side is a manor house, and on the right a man is shooting at a bird in flight, his dog looking on. The balloon from the man on the left says the house has a "Post Office", the man on the right says it has "A Bowling Green." In cloth folding case, with inner chemise.In June, 1775, the Massachusetts physician and patriot entrusted to his paramour a letter in ciphers intended for his brother-in-law, the Boston printer and Loyalist John Fleming. The woman gave the letter to her former lover Godfrey Wainwood in Newport and addressed it to "Major Cane in Boston," but Wainwood opened the letter, which he could not read, and retained it. First Edition, first issue. Tarkington's second book is a novel about a mysterious French gambler in 18th century Bath, England. He has inscribed it on verso of the frontispiece: "Inscribed for Mr H. Kauti, Booth Tarkington, Sept. 22, 1941." "Kauti" was, in fact, New York bookseller G. A. Van Nosdall, a famous faker in the book world who send books to authors for inscription under his fake name, and then sell them as association copies. Probably inscribed at Kennebunkport, Maine. The book was a success, and was successfully turned into a play, opera, and a film starring Rudolph Valentino.
