The boards are in fine condition, all corners are firm, sharp and square with virtually no shelf wear. The binding is tight and square. Internally, there is no name or inscription and all pages are lovely and clean. The beautiful Williamson designed dust jacket is in excellent condition, with no tears and only miniscule surface loss at the tips of the spine head corners and tip of the top corner of the front flap joint. A near fine book. Internally clean, without name, inscription or bookplate and just a hint of mottling to the pastedowns [the result of the glue used in manufacture]. The dust jacket which is now protected in a removable, clear cover [not shown] has light rubbing to the spine tips corners and edges with a little fading to the titles on the spine. There is a 2.5 cm closed tear on the lower joint at the head of the spine and a 0.3cm closed tear on the bottom of the front panel with a little associated creasing. All edges tinted yellow. Blue pictorial endpapers, 8 colour plates, including tissue frontispiece, and 30 black & white illustrations within the text, 296pp. There is some very light rubbing down the right edge of the front board, a tiny dent in the fore edge of both boards and one to the lower joint. All corners have very light surface shelf wear and the the top right corner of the front board has a tiny bruise. The binding is tight and square. Internally, there is a neat name dated October 1909 on the half title page. The pages are very clean with only sporadic small spots and marks. All in all a very scarce proof copy of the Booker Prize Winning author's first book which has never been reprinted. Simms and M'Intyre, 1851 1851. 1st thus, 10 x 16.5 half leather over marbled boards with gilt stamped titles to the spine, 288pp, lacking half title page and with the top half of the title page having been excised. [Gilson E18] Rubbing to the spine tips, edges and corners with the leather being split along both joints with the front cover being supported by an old, crude repair to the front endpapers. The marbled boards are rubbed with some loss of paper to the rear board. There are two ownership names on the front pastedown. Internally the top half of the title page has been excised and there is light toning and occasional marking to the pages. An unusual early copy in need of a little attention.
