Lugd. Batavorum (Leiden): Franciscum Hackium, 1658. Early Edition. Very Good. A very good 1658 edition of the Roman Civil War by Lucan. Bound in full vellum with some staining and discoloration to covers. Edges stained red, faded. Some creasing and shallow tears to the first few and final few pages. No imacts to images or text. Interior is toned, with some minor spotting. Contemporary or early notes on final blank and rear pastedown.  Pages: (24) 614 (144)   Dimensions: 7½ x 5 x 1⅝ .

Lugduni (Lyon): Simonis Vincentii, 1538. Later Edition. Very Good. Fine binding. The name, "Edward White Benton," is inscribed on the front flyleaf. Each section begins with a woodcut capital letter. Late 17th century full calf rebaked with original spine laid-down, gilt tooled in a fleur de lis seme pattern with a central device of a shield with lilies encircled by thorms or "lilium inter spinas" and tooled with the title "Collegium Grasssineum", marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Vincinti's printer's device, historiated initials. Front cover reattached professionally using Japanese paper, corners sympathetically repaired, pale toning and foxing at margins, old pencil and ink notations to front flyleaves. Ink inscription by Edward White Beson, former 19th century Bishop of Canterbury, or his father.  Pages: (4) 270 (6) Dimensions: 6½ x 4⅜ x 1.

Strassburg (possibly): Argentorati (per Josiam Rihelium), 1578. Early Edition. Good+. Intricate stamped cover. Right side of cover is missing part of the leather and is separating from boards on the bottom. Stamped image of man and woman with child is on front cover with a crest on the back cover. Words surround the characters on the front (RI?VMDENOMINEVIRTUSOMNIAQUEPIETASSVADET - OBIRESEOVOR - QUAEVOCORINSIGNICHA). Back cover contains what appears to be an Austrian Eagle and coat of arms depicting gryffins, eagles and lions.  Period notes in the margins throughout the book with higher concentration at the beginning. 304 leaves plus complete Index; page numbers only on right side.  Pages: 666 Dimensions: 4¾ x 7 x 2.

Francofurti (Frankfurt): Melchiorem Hartmannum, 1601. Later Edition. Very Good. Bound in embossed pigskin with remains of clasps to boards. Beautiful embossing, tightly bound, some foxing/discoloration throughout but does not mar ability to read. Marks and stains to covers. Italic text in Latin. Final blank missing ? of the page, cleanly torn.  Pages: 333  Dimensions: 3⅝ x 5⅛ x 1¾.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971. 1st American. Very Good+. Stated first edition. Unclipped dust jacekt with minor staining and creases. Cream cloth boards with lettering to front and spine, and printers impression on back. Some discoloartion to edges of covers. Deckled long fore edge and untrimmed bottom edge. Interior is clean and clear and crisp as though not opened before. Stamp on first blank showing an H inside a circle.

New York: Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, 1926. First Thus. Near Fine/Very Good. First Grosset and Dunlap edition, with 'Published Aygust, 1926,' on copyright page. In original, unclipped, jacket in protective sheet with hundreds of titles on the jacket verso. Toning to the jacket, some chipping and creases, generally very good. Bound in bright red cloth over boards with black lettering on the front and spine. Solid, square and tightly bound with minor rubbing at edges. Some spotting on long edge. Title page and page of contents with some spotting, only a few minor marginal spots elesewhere; pages are crisp and clean.  Pages: (8) 365 (12 ads)     Dimensions: 7½ x 5¼ x 1¼.

New York: The Modern Library, 1936. 2nd Thus. Very Good. Second or later edition from The Modern Library. No dust jacket. Bound in green cloth over flexible boards. Spine slightly faded, bumped corners, a few bumps to sides, top fore edge stained green. Interior lightly toned, otherwise clean and clear.

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1918. 1st Thus. Very Good. First edition thus from Boni and Liveright, which would soon become The Modern Library, with Brodzky endpapers. Brown leatherette over flexibile boards with publisher's device on front cover and title, author, and publisher inside double rule on spine. Rubbing to head and tail corners of spine, crease down center of spine, light rubbing to extremities, 1 inch tear to back endpaper, and small stain on same. Top fore edge stained to match leatherette, interior lightly toned, otherwise fine. A very good surviving 1st Thus. No dust jacket.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1936. 1st Edition. Very Good/Good. In original jacket, with price marked in pencil on inside front flap ($2.75). Jacket corners just barely trimmed, in mylar, with some rubbing, chipping, and creasing including a large chip out of the spine tail. Green cloth over boards with a pasted down label on the spine with a color illustration, the title, and author colors remain bright); publishers debossed and gilded (faded somewhat). Corners are just bumped, and some rubbing to edges. The interior is lightly toned, otherwise clean and clear.  Pages: (8) 539 (3)   Dimensions: 8¼ x 5¾ x 1⅞.

In original unclipped ($2.00) jacket in clear protective sheet (corners barely trimmed not affecting anything). Wear to extremities including some short tears and chips (overall minimal). Yellow cloth over boards with profile in black of Maigret smoking a pipe on the front and black lettering on spine. General ageing to the covers with slight rubbing to extremities and gently rubbed corners. Some pencil notes to ffep. A handful of marginal spots, otherwise the interior is evenly toned, clean, and clear. Two novels within  one volume; "The Lock at Charenton" and "Maigret Returns." Pages: (6) 305     Dimensions: 8⅛ x 5⅞ x 1½ .

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1941. 1st U.S. Edition (Review Copy). Very Good+/Good. Translated from the French by Margaret Ludwig. Contains two novels: "The Sailors' Rendezvous" and "The Saint-Fiacre Affair." First U.S. edition in original jacket with $2.00 price on inside flap in a clear protective sheet. General wear to the jacket with creasing along edges and spine, and chipping in a few places including head and tail of spine; corners trimmed but not affecting price or any words. Black cloth over boards with the profile of the detective smoking a pipe in green on the front and green lettering to the spine. Corners very slightly bumped, some light rubbing to head and tail of spine, otherwise fine. Edges are all clean. "Review Copy Publication Date Aug 7 1941 Price $2.00" stamped on ffep. The interior is very lightly and evening toned with no other found markings or blemishes.  Pages: (6) 312     Dimensions: 8⅛ x 5¾ x 1⅜ .

Deckled long fore edge, edges slightly toned. Interior is clean, clear, crisp, and with an unbroken spine. Aside from edge toning in as new condition.

Black leather covers with gilded designs to front, spine, and back covers. Gilt fore edges. Purple/indigo silk moiré endpapers and black satin bookmark. Very tight spine, unread condition. Endpapers are purple closer to the edges and deep indigo closer to the middle.

Second or later edition from The Modern Library. No jacket. Red cloth over boards with gilded lettering inside and frames around black labels on front and spine. Darkening at spine, light fraying at head of spine, some soiling. Top for edge stained blue. Interior slightly toned, otherwise very clean and clear.

Dust jacket present and in very good condition with some slight creases and scuffs (see phots for details). Grey/blue cloth over boards with gilded author, title, and publisher on the spine. Pages are crisp and clean, likely never read.
