First printing of this rare and important account of Lower California by the German Jesuit, Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for seventeen years (1751-68) and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga, leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California, including the Pericues, Guiacuras, and Cochiemes. Part one is an overview of California, its climate and products; part two describes the inhabitants; and the third part contains an account of the introduction of Christianity to California. Altogether, there were seventeen reports issued by the Lutheran pastors in Pennsylvania to the authorities in Halle, each with a special titlepage, twelve of which appear here. Smith was born of respectable British parents, but after his father died he was sent to work as an errand boy at age seven, and not unlike other young men in his situation, he soon found himself at sea. He participated in seven whaling voyages to the Pacific from 1816 to 1832, as well as numerous other sea adventures all over the world, including the South Pacific, the Atlantic coast of South America, Africa, and the Antarctic regions. Rosove notes that the work has been missed by many bibliographers because it is "so rare and little known." This private expedition was undertaken to search for the second Ross expedition. Back and his party went from Montreal to Great Slave Lake, then overland to the Arctic Ocean. The narrative also contains valuable information on Arctic flora and fauna. A basic Arctic exploration. The Streeter copy sold to parties unknown for $90 in 1969. His work focused on the now extinct Timucua tribe and life in the New World. His drawings are considered some of the most historically significant depictions of early colonial life. An anonymous account by a field officer, now attributed to John Goulston Price Tucker, of Samuel Auchmuty's capture of Montevideo in 1807. This attack was one of a series of British incursions in South America in the beginning of the 19th century. Auchmuty's original mission was to retake Buenos Aires, which had briefly been under British control. As this was not possible, he chose instead to attack nearby Montevideo, which was strongly fortified, but much smaller than Buenos Aires. Stab holes visible in gutter of half title, titlepage, and a few other leaves. Near fine. Second edition, after the first of the same year. Howe, as commander-in-chief of the British forces during the American Revolution, led his troops to a number of impressive victories. Although he repelled the attack of Washington at Germantown, he made no attempt to drive the weakened American forces from their camp at Valley Forge, instead spending the winter of 1777-78 in comfort in Philadelphia. Howe was severely criticized for his actions. He was recalled by the British government in May of 1778, and Sir Henry Clinton was appointed his successor. This pamphlet relates to a controversy that ensued over the schoolbook abridgment of Adams' A SUMMARY HISTORY OF NEW ENGLAND (1799), which Jedediah Morse had anticipated by producing his own school history. Adams, whose eyesight was failing, felt her rights were violated and issued the present work as a protest. She was probably the first female professional writer of the United States. Bolin was hanged for murder in front of about 5,000 people; this was his last ditch effort to defend himself and avoid execution. This copy is signed by the publisher on the titlepage

Bath: William Meyler, 1807. [2],38pp. Lacks engraved plan. Modern red cloth, spine gilt. Minor foxing to titlepage, else quite clean. Very good. An anonymous straight-forward account of the British attack on Buenos Aires in 1807, written "without any flourishing or prolix declamation on the calamities of war, the effects of courage, or the pursuit of wealth and fame." The unidentified author includes extensive details on the final engagements leading to the defeat of the British troops under Lieut. Gen. John Whitelocke by the Spanish citizen army of Creoles and peasants under the command of Santiago de Liniers. Forced to withdraw from Buenos Aires after this defeat, Whitelocke was court-martialed and cashiered. An intriguing record of the British engagement in Buenos Aires with an unusual Bath imprint for such a work. OCLC records only five copies. SABIN 51805. ALBERICH 1247.

Franchère was with the party John Jacob Astor sent to the Pacific Northwest to establish a fur trading base in the Oregon country. That party was the first to use South Pass, which was to become the main pass over the northern Rockies. Franchère first published his account in Montreal in 1820. That edition is now extremely rare. The account includes a description of the voyage to South America, with stops at St. Bartholomew, Grenada, St. Lucia, and other points in the Caribbean. The appendix prints a list of the officers of the First Venezuelan Hussars, as well as other documents, orders, etc., issued by Venezuelan leaders, including Bolivar. A fascinating account of South American independence movements, Bolivar, etc., notwithstanding Sabin's assertion that Lord Byron used the book to put himself to sleep.
