Spine creased, boards a little marked. ‘Readers file 6’ in red pencil to some wrappers (sometimes partially cropped). 25 issues of a current affairs bulletin produced for training purposes by and for the New Zealand armed forces, in a workmanlike but contemporary binding. Topics covered include war in Russia and the Pacific and brief overviews of contemporary developments in Italy, and France in the context of the war, as well as issues on democracy in America, health services, soil fertility and one titled ‘About Houses’. Edinburgh: Printed for Waugh and Innes, 1820. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. ix, [v], 256 + frontispiece, 1 plate, and 1 folding map. Modern plain blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt. A little light spotting, plates toned. Library bookplate to front pastedown (overstamped ‘duplicate sold’), East India Company library stamps to title-page, final leaf, and verso of map. George Buchan of Kelloe (1775-1856) was a teenager on the voyage in question, which ran aground on rocks a few miles from Madagascar, leaving the survivors marooned on the island. After further adventures they reached Madras, where Buchan went on to be a secretary to the government, eventually retiring to an estate in Berwickshire.

London: William Pickering; Hamilton, Adams & Co., 1846. 8vo, pp. xvi, 276. Original green ribbed cloth, boards blocked in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Spine gilt tarnished, corners bumped. Christopher Anderson (1782-1852) was an Edinburgh preacher and writer, with particular interest in spreading scripture in Celtic languages, though his most lasting work was on the English bible.

Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas, 1863. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xlvii, [i], 336, 24 (ads). Black and white illustrations within pagination. Original textured maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards bordered with double blind rules. Binding somewhat rubbed, spine ends bumped. Dundee bookseller’s label and armorial bookplate of Peter Carmichael to front pastedown. The first edition of this posthumously published collection of observations by Scottish naturalist Charles St. John (1809-1856), which his wife Anne St. John edited anonymously. This copy was sold by Frederick Shaw of Dundee in the nineteenth century.

Contemporary tree calf, spine divided by gilt rolls, red morocco label. 5cm vertical tear to one leaf without loss. A little rubbed, spine somewhat creased. Ownership inscription of Foddert and further inscription recording the death of Bailie H. Mackenzie on 29th November 1783 and the birth of Hectorina on 19th January 1784 to flyleaves. ESTC T140567 calls for a slightly different collation and corresponding page-count but this book conforms to the alternative collation given in the notes of the record. This copy however has leaf C6 unsigned, where both collations and the consulted BL copy have it signed D3. ESTC T140567.

Contemporary calf, spine divided and decorated in gilt rules and stamps, red morocco label lettered in gilt, edges speckled blue. Several leaves a touch soiled. Extremities a little rubbed, spine creased. Ink ownership inscription to title-page, scribble on verso of front flyleaf.

Some damp-staining and foxing to flyleaves and first gathering. Boards a little worn, grey paper neatly renewed, preserving old label, now a bit chipped. Printed label of ‘Nivison & Forrest Booksellers, 10. North Bridge, Edinburgh’ to front pastedown, early signature to title-page. The third edition of the expansive collection of household advice, first printed in 1810, with instructions for everything from mixing cement to taxidermy. It is sometimes attributed to Maria Eliza Rundell (1745-1828), known for the hugely popular ‘Domestic Cookery’, which was also printed for John Murray in 1805. This copy originally sold in Edinburgh where William Blackwood was joint publisher.

The first edition of this retrospective and bibliography published for the 50th anniversary of the New Naturalist series. One of the ‘Golden Thirteen’, the most sought-after titles within the series. First and last leaves somewhat toned. Binding a little soiled. Ownership inscription to flyleaf of Fr. H. Urquhart, Portpatrick, dated October 1877. A reprint of German schoolmaster Johann Franz Ahn’s popular language textbook, with a ‘Caution’ printed to the verso of the half-title advising against spurious, unauthorised editions of his work. Ahn also adapted his new, practical easy method to produce guides to Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. This edition is unknown to Library Hub and Worldcat, both of which record multiple similar editions from the 1850s to 1870s, usually in single copies.

London: Printed for R. H. Laurie, 1840. 8vo, pp. xvi, xlv, [i], 208, xxvii, [i], 282. Contemporary half black calf, marbled boards, spine divided by double gilt rules between blind rolls, lettered in gilt direct, edges sprinkled red. Some spotting to first and last leaves. A bit rubbed and a touch worn. Two navigation aids by hydrographer John Purdy (1773-1843), covering the whole of the Mediterranean between them. Purdy ‘was respected as the foremost authority in private chart publishing, where he was exceptional for the care with which he acknowledged the many varied sources on which his work was based’ (ODNB) and is the namesake of the Purdy Islands in the Bismark Sea. Both volumes are scarce, with The Strait of Gibraltar only showing digital copies on Library Hub and 2 copies on Worldcat, at California and Missouri, and The Gulf of Venice only at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

Dustjacket with three internal sellotape repairs, flaps creased. A very presentable copy of Murdoch’s eleventh novel, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1969.

Paper lightly toned, a few tiny spots. Spine dulled and gilt mostly gone, a few marks, spine ends bumped. Presentation inscription to flyleaf: ‘Mrs N Harrison / from / William Hope Hodgson - / Nov: 28th-/12’. A scarce presentation copy of William Hope Hodgson’s landmark horror-fantasy, an early example of a ‘Dying Earth’ story in the same genre as the end of H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine. It made a strong impression on Hodgson’s contemporaries: Lovecraft referenced it in ‘Supernatural Horror in Literature’ as ‘yet one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written’, and Clark Ashton Smith felt similarly about it. Poetry Book Society Bulletin from Autumn 1968 loosely inserted. The first edition (only issued in wrappers) of Derek Mahon’s first book, many of the poems in which were written while Mahon was an undergraduate at Trinity College, Dublin. This collection was the Poetry Book Society Autumn choice in 1968; loosely inserted is that season’s bulletin with writing from Mahon reflecting on the composition of the poems.

London: Faber & Faber Limited, 1955. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 75, [1]. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black dustjacket printed in white and blue. A touch of wear to dustjacket spine panel ends. Graham’s 5th collection, written after his move to Cornwall and containing the long poem that gives the collection its title, recounting his experiences trawling off Mevagissey. Out of vogue on publication despite the praise of T.S. Eliot, this collection has been critically re-evaluated: reviewing a new Selected Poems in the LRB in 2019, Seamus Perry wrote that ‘‘The Nightfishing’ is one of those rare poems that consciously sets out to be a masterpiece and pulls it off.’

Original pale rough cloth backed in grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt, grey slipcase. A fine copy. Signed by the author on the limitation page. One of 150 regular copies printed on Zerkall mould made paper and bound in cloth (26 lettered copies were bound in leather).

Rear wrapper a little marked The four authors in this collection each address in different ways the idea of ‘North’, each contributing an essay so titled and in the second section, another piece of writing. Joanna Kavenna’s reflects on the travelling done for her first book ‘The Ice Museum,’ published in 2005, and Robert Macfarlane’s account of a trip to Ynys Enlli prefigures a section on the island in 2007’s The Wild Places. Simon Armitage’s second contribution is a translation of a section of ‘Gawain and the Green Knight’, published two years later. Per the limitation statement 1000 copies were printed, ‘of which the first 250 are numbered for presentation.’

A rare survival of the original plain dustjacket - this copy from the archive of the printer - which would mostly have been removed when stock arrived in bookshops.
