Signed and inscribed by the author to the title page to historian Hugh Brogan and also with a signed postcard referring to the book from Laski to Brogan laid in. A near fine book, clean and bright with firm sharp corners and just a neat ownership name to the front free endpaper. The jacket which is now protected in a clear removable jacket (not shown) is in excellent condition with just a hint of shelf wear along the bottom edge and touch of creasing along the top. This was Laski's last novel and is widely considered to be her best work. Reprint, 11.2 x 16 cm contemporary red cloth with gilt stamped line decoration and titles to the spine red speckled edges 446[2] 16pp Publisher's catalogue. Vol. 1176 in Tauchnitz Collection of British Authors. The spine is somewhat toned with rubbing to the joints, spine tips and corners with splits in the cloth of 0.5 to 2 cm on the joint tips, 3 pinholes in the cloth along the joints, a split across the foot of the spine and a 0.5 cm chip at the head. However, the binding is firm. There is an ink mark on the upper board. The boards are very good with just a little rubbing to the spine tips and corners and edges. The gilt decoration and titles on the spine being only lightly rubbed.
