Saranac, NY: Adirondack Yesteryears, Inc., 1973 Hard cover, 4to, in green cloth blocked with gold titles, in an olive green pictorial dust jacket, illustrated end papers, 224 pp, First Edition. Condition: Fine. In a Very Good dust jacket, with some fading to the spine, now in a mylar protector.** These are the edited reminiscences of Charles E. Merrill (d. 1935) about the early settlement of the Northern Adirondack Chateaugay Lakes region of New York, to the west of Lake Champlain. The Merrill family were first settlers in the years of westward expansion of the late eighteenth century, and gave their name to the area's first town. Merrill tells of land clearances , house and barn raisings, maple sugaring, and a whole variety of the pioneer existence in a series of very readable essays that read like short stories. Employed as a guide for hunters and other visitors, he also became an early voice for conservation. . First Edition . Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good . Illus. by Tom Welch.

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1876 Soft cover in printed tan wrapper, 134 pp. plus publisher's adverts. This is the complete novel. "No. 430 (of 460 selections listed) in the publisher's popular series, the " Library of Select Novels," which was available by post. Owner's signature stamp appears on the wraps. First published in 1875, this was the most popular work of the author, remaining in publication until 1914. Mary Cecil Hay (1839-1886) was a prolific British writer, often working under a male pseudonym. This story of the supposed murder of a wealthy aging uncle by his nephew was "ripped from the headlines," based partly on the story of the murder of William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale in 1716, who like the nephew in Hay's story, escaped from execution dressed as a woman. Condition: Very Good. Some loss to head and tale of spine and light creasing. One staple has come through the back of wrap. A couple of small closed tears to front and rear of wrap. Otherwise, the contents are… Read More
