About the story of Jesus and his miracles." This copy is from the library of James F. Hunnewell (1832-1910), with his bookplate. Hunnewell was a Boston book collector and bibliographer. He published BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS in 1869. His father, James Hunnewell, became familiar with the islands when the ship he was on was sold to Hawaiian chiefs. The senior Hunnewell was responsible for collecting the payment in sandalwood and then selling it in China. An apparently unrecorded form, printing an oath of allegiance to the United States government and the provisional government of Missouri early in the Civil War. The pro-Union state government was established when Northern forces took Jefferson City in 1861 and the Confederate government established by Claiborne Fox Jackson was put to flight. Nevertheless, the shadow government continued to operate and the national Confederate government at Richmond counted Missouri as one of its constituent states; moreover, there was much conflict between pro-Union and Confederate Missourians throughout the course of the war. Modern bookplate on rear pastedown. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. Memorial volume published on the occasion of the re-interment of several soldiers in the state cemetery in Frankfort. The remains in question belonged to Gen. Charles Scott, Maj. William T. Barry, and Capt. Bland Ballard and his wife - the men all having been notable Kentucky pioneers, politicians, and soldiers. The events were opened by Governor Lazarus W. Powell, who noted the presence of many veterans of the War of 1812 and then introduced the various orators who spoke on the lives of the men being interred. Scarce

The Philadelphia Domestic Society was formed with an interest in encouraging the domestic production of manufactures, and sought an official charter from the Pennsylvania legislature. In this pamphlet the anonymous author refutes the arguments made against the society, including the belief that charters are inherently undemocratic. First edition of a work which marks the beginning of modern Spanish historical writing. This study of the Romans, Jews, and Moors in Spain up to the 13th century was the most important work issued by the Academia Valenciana which had been founded in 1742 to publish historical studies. Preceded by a long and erudite introduction by Mayans y Siscar and by the Constitutions of the Academia, Ibanez de Segovia (1628-1708) reexamines ancient records in an effort to separate fact from fiction in Spanish history. Likely a proof copy of the exceedingly rare broadside announcing the funeral procession for President Abraham Lincoln in Springfield in early May 1865. Struck down by assassin John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865, Lincoln's body lay in state in the White House on April 18, and a ceremonial funeral service took place in Washington, D.C. around noon on April 19. Two days later, President Lincoln's casket was loaded on a funeral train headed for Springfield, Illinois, stopping at Baltimore, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Michigan City, and Chicago before arriving in Lincoln's adopted hometown early on the morning of May 3. Professor Unanue was famous in his time, and through his books his prestige reached Europe. In this book the author, who today would be considered a physician-hygienist, was very interested in diet, climate, the races that lived together in Lima, the typical diseases of the place, food, the methods of curing climatic illnesses, etc. There are also various references to wine as a curative throughout the text. Mably's work consists of four letters written to John Adams, then the American Minister to Holland, on the government, laws, and political divisions in the United States. The French took great interest in the form that the American government would take after the Revolution, publishing the constitutions of the thirteen states in 1783. "Mably comments on the American approach to government as reflected in the constitutions of the thirteen states, and, more specifically, in those of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Georgia...he offers advice on a national constitution, urging a loose federation rather than a strong central government and warning against excessive democracy" - Cohen. His OBSERVATIONS... includes his report to the Académie des Sciences on the Montgolfiers' balloon and a proposal for a balloon motorized by steam jets and guided by rudders, which prefigures the blimp. Brisson's work also contains a valuable dictionary of the recently developed ballooning terminology. This is the scarcer quarto printing of his report; an octavo edition appeared the same year. Else a lovely copy, in original condition. An important work on French assistance to the Americans during the Revolution, written by Conrad Gérard de Rayneval. Rayneval's tract is a response to Edward Gibbon's MÉMOIRE JUSTICATIF..., composed in French and first published in 1779. Gibbon's work was prompted by a French justification of their actions early in the Revolution. Rayneval continues the debate, and his work is an important contribution to the issue of diplomatic recognition by neutrals of seceded colonies and revolutionary governments. Rayneval served as a secretary to the French Foreign Minister, the Comte de Vergennes. Another work with the same title, but not identical, was also published by Beaumarchais. Half title and title-leaf restored along gutter, first leaf of dedication with an old repair, obscuring five full lines and fourteen half- lines of text. A good plus copy. A nice association copy, bearing an inscription in a slightly later hand on the half title reading, "Lydia Abbot's Book the gift of Mrs. Abigail Foxcroft," and in the same hand (presumably Lydia Abbot's): "Lydia Abbot her book." Abigail Foxcroft (d. 1803) was apparently the daughter of the author. First and only edition of this "valuable tract, compiled from original sources" (Sabin).
