Description:
1827. About 2 x 4 inches, laid down. Discovered in Victorian album. Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855), rear-admiral and Arctic explorer. His 1819 voyage through the Parry Channel was probably the most successful in the long quest for the Northwest Passage. In 1827 he attempted one of the earliest expeditions to the North Pole. He reached 82°45 North latitude, setting the record for human exploration farthest North that stood for nearly five decades before being surpassed at 83°20 26 by Albert Hastings Markham in 1875–1876.

Description:
Whitehall, 5 April 1712. 2 pp. 11½ x 7 inches, in good condition. With the integral blank leaf. Lieutenant-General Francis Palmes (d.1719), noted favourite general of the Duke of Marlborough. Palmes assumed command of his regiment at the Battle of Blenheim. Reports from the battle state that 'hardly anyone was more instrumental to the success of that day' than Palmes. From February 1708 Palmes travelled extensively, undertaking mission to the United Provinces, Hanover, Prussia, Vienna and Savoy in order to concert measures with the allies. He was promoted to lieutenant-general in the Army in 1709 and became envoy to Poland in 1718. 7 april 1862. 4 x 5 inches, in fine condition. From the autograph book compiled by Hugh Welch Diamond (1809-1886), "the father of psychiatric photography". Rare. Edward Kater (1816-1866), photographer. He joined the Calotype Club in the 1840s, becoming a vice president of the Photographic Society when it was formed. In 1852 Kater’s “Proof of the Value of Photography to the Archaeologist” appeared in Notes and Queries.

Whitehall, 14 April 1709. 2 pp. 12 x 7 inches, in fine condition, with an integral blank leaf tipped on to a card mount. This handsome letter is signed by Lord Stamford [Thomas Grey, second Earl of Stamford, 1654-1720, president of the board], Sir Philip Meadows, R.Monckton, Charles Turner, and J.Pulteney. Sir Philip Meadows (1626-1718) had a distinguished career as a diplomat, representing Cromwell in international treaty negotiations. Meadows was the author of several works, including Observations concerning the Dominion and Sovereignty of the Seas (1689). Although little commercial value would accrue to England on this voyage, the Committee nevertheless recommend that a Pass be issued, believing that “the said Marquis, when at Cartagena, will be a Friend to Her Majesty’s Subjects in their Carrying on a Trade from Jamaica to Cartagena, and other parts on that Coast; the great Advantage whereof We need not mention.”

Louisbourg [Cape Breton, Canada], 7 September 1747. 1 page 13 x 8 inches, horiizontal folds for filing, complete but faded. Docketed on verso. David Wooster (1710-1777), American general in the American War of Independence. He fell during the Battle of Ridgefield, Connecticut. Cities, schools, and public places are named after him. In 1745, Wooster was appointed to command a regiment in Connecticut formed by Colonel Burr. The regiment went against Louisbourg. Louisbourg is a seaport village on the eastern coast of the island of Cape Breton, which is an insular colony of British North America. Wooster reduced Louisbourg's fortifications and forced them to surrender. After the capitulation, Wooster was ordered to take charge of the cartel. The cartel was sent to France to negotiate the exchange of prisoners from the war. Wooster was not permitted to land on French soil, so he conducted his negotiations aboard ship in neutral territory. Given at Our Court at Windsor Castle, 2 January 1826. 5 pp. 12 x 8 inches, tied by blue ribbon, Royal wafer seal affixed. In superb condition. Light horizontal folds. King George IV (reigned 1820-1830). Sir Charles Stuart (1779-1845), diplomat, who was of great service to the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War, had a second term as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal and Brazil in 1825-26. The King appoints Stuart and Chamberlain as “Our undoubted Commissioners, Procurators and Plenipotentiaries”. Stuart was already Envoy to Brazil for King John VI of Portugal and has signed the Treaty recognising the independence of Brazil on 19 August 1825. George Canning (1770-1827), Prime Minister from April 1827, signs as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

2 July 1851. 2 x 7 inches, in good condition. Uncommon. Dr. Daniel Curdie (1810-1884), Scottish doctor who emigrated to Australia (1839) and became a distinguished botanist. In 1845 he. followed Curdie's River down to the sea, and the estuary was called Curdie's Inlet after him. He left for Europe on "Black Thursday" (7th February, 1851), and in Scotland, continuing his studies of sea-weeds, he was so fortunate as to discover a new one. He returned to Melbourne, with a wife, in 1854.

Gibraltar, 24 June 1775. 2 pp. 13 x 8 inches, wafer seal affixed, in very good condition. Lieutenant-General Sir Robert Boyd (1710-1794). In 1756 he served at the Siege of Minorca, and attempted to reach Admiral John Byng's fleet in an open boat with a message from the besieged Garrison Commander William Blakeney. He subsequently became commissary general to the Marquess of Granby in Germany (1758 to 1759); he then rose through the officer ranks to be three-times Governor of Gibraltar (1776 to 1777, 1790 and 1790 to 1794). Boyd considered that his and General Sir William Green's work on the King's Bastion in Gibraltar was so important that he asked to be buried there.

Undated. 6 x 4 inches, inlaid to mount. On the verso is a signed photograph of John Gilbert Talbot M.P. James Edwin Thorold Rogers (1823-1890), known as Thorold Rogers, political economist and Member of Parliament. He deployed historical and statistical methods to analyse some of the key economic and social questions in Victorian England. Rogers was instrumental in obtaining the Clerical Disabilities Relief Act, of which he was the first beneficiary, becoming the first man to withdraw legally from his clerical vows in 1870. His most influential works were the 6-volume History of Agriculture and Prices in England from 1259 to 1795 and Six Centuries of Work and Wages.
