Binding reasonably firm though strained in the off place and front and rear inner hinges are cracked. Page edges speckled and a bit browned. Patterned endpapers. No dust jacket. Dark blue cloth boards and spine, with marking and scuffing, plus a tear to the upper spine. Title on spine faded. Binding holding but strained in several places. Corners bumped and a little torn. Some browning and a little tanning to page edges. Information sheet about the author (possibly part of the original dust jacket) taped onto FFEP. Slight wear and rubbing but colour, design and gilt detail very vivid. Removable protective clear plastic cover. Some signs of shelf-wear. Book has slight forward tilt. Corners bumped and rubbed. Binding firm. Page edges browned but reasonably clean. Small seller stamp to FFEP and bookplate from 1898 for school prizegiving to front pastedown. Corners bumped and a little torn. Binding holding although crack to front inner hinge and FFEP a bit loose. Page edges browned and some are a little uneven. Previous owner name written in pencil on inside of FFEP. Otherwise page surfaces are free of any underlining, marginalia, etc. though there are odd marks here and there. A nice set, richly illustrated and informative about various religious, scientific and philosophical matters.
Each volume measures 10" by 7.5". Patterned cloth boards. Gilt lettering to spines. Boards and spines are scuffed and marked, spines especially, which are also a bit discoloured but overall binding has retained much of its colouring. Signs of rubbing and shelf-wear, especially to spines. Some tearing to tops of spines of volumes 2 and 3, whilst volume 1 is split along the outer rear hinge. Other hinges, outer and inner, intact. Corners bumped and a little worn. Binding firm. Page edges a little browned but reasonably clean. Some pencil underlining and marginalia, etc. throughout. See pictures for further information.
