Description:
A VERY LARGE EXAMPLE OF 18TH CENTURY SCHERENSCHNITTE OLD TESTAMENT FOLK ARTCOX, James, fl. 1741. Large folio "Scherenschnitte," or scissor art, depicting scenes from the Old Testament, 21 ½ x 17", laid down on contrasting black mat, in a 19th century frame, signed both in ink, and by scissors work, "James Cox, Midhurst [West Sussex, England] January 27, 1741."
Scherenschnitte is the visually stunning traditional folk art of cutting continuous paper designs, and often has symmetry within the design, i.e. "scissor snipping", or "scissor cutting." Originally practiced in China, it made its way to Austria, then spread all over Europe, much of it in the western art of Switzerland and Germany where it was called "scherenschnitte." This is a particularly early example from England, a country where the art form only became popular in the 1720's. There is so much going on here it takes a considerable amount of attention to notice… Read More

BY USE OF A CARTOON, A CARTOONIST PLAYFULLY ACCUSES OLIVER HERFORD OF NOT ONLY NOT AUTOGRAPHING A BOOK FOR HIM, BUT KEEPING BOOKS AS WELL
CROSBY, Percy Leo (1891-1964), American Cartoonist. [HERFORD, Oliver]. Full-page pen-and-ink cartoon, 1p., 4to. N.p., n.d. [1920's?].
A wonderful cartoon executed for Herford of a cherubic angel in "Heaven" writing in the "Book of Life", playfully accusing Herford of not only not inscribing books to him, but of keeping them as well: "Oliver Herford neglected to autograph a book for Percy Crosby and even went so far as to keep books. Please look into this Jesus." The two were friends, and Herford wrote the introduction to Crosby's
Skippy, from Life (1924). Horizontal fold line. 83579

PERKINS, Jacob. On the Explosion of Steam Boilers. [caption-title]. 8vo, disbound, pp. 18 + folding plate. N.p., n.d. [i.e. London: 1827. First Edition. Rare. "In 1823, at fifty-seven years of age, Perkins started an entirely new type of activity, new to him and almost entirely new to science. This was his experimental work with steam of high pressure."-Dirk J. Struik, Yankee Science in the Making (1948), p. 69. Our copy is exactly like the BL copy, without formal title-page, and beginning on sig. "B"1. Inscribed on title: "With the Author's Compliments," and with a single correction in ink on p. 16. In 1823 Perkins invented super heated steam in an experiment, called a "flash boiler", one thousand shots per minute, using 900psi steam. This steam was later used in nuclear power plants to turn the steam turbines, and small flash boilers were used on some steam automobiles and… Read More

LOTS OF CHILDREN RUSSELL, Bertha, Boston, Mass. Original sketchbook, with the ticket of "A. A. Walker & Co., Artists Materials & Fine Stationary, 538 Washington Street, Boston." 49 pp. of pencil and pen-and-ink drawings. Oblong 4to, original calf backed cloth (spine worn), signed and dated inside front cover, "Bertha Russell/Boston Mass./ (August 1887). Bertha has affixed a small photograph which we assume is of herself to a 4 x 6 ¾" drawing she has pinned to the first sheet, dating it Dec. 26th (1881). The only Bertha Russell we find that fits the bill of a young lady of Boston, married Samuel Ellsworth Winslow, Harvard '85, in 1889. She has been described as "the elegant Bertha Russell, an accomplished violinist." We don't notice any violins here, but there are a couple of cellos, or bass. She is mentioned in "Casey at the Bat. The Ballad of Sam Winslow," online, April 21, 2021.

Original Manuscript poem to her sister, Gertrude (1896-1986), American sculptor. 1p., 8vo, on bifolium of floral designed Japanese tissue paper + envelope hand addressed to their home address, postmarked and cancelled. Albany, New York, Dec. 22, 1911.
Twenty-year-old Dorothy Lathrop writes a sixteen-line poem in two eight-line stanzas for her fifteen-year-old sister, Gertrude, both of whom were living at 151 South Allen Street, Albany, NY. "If you have a song to sing:/ Sing it to-Day/ Let notes of gladness sing/ Clear as song of bird in spring./ Let every day some music sing:/ Sing it to-day./ If you have a smile to show,/ Show it to-day./ Make hearts happy, roses grow,/ Let the friends around you know/ The love you have before they go,/ Show it to-day." This predates by a number of years Dorothy's artistic and writing career which began in 1919. WITH: WEATHERLY, Fred[eric] E[dmund]. Happy Childhood.… Read More
