Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Engraved armorial bookplate for William Henry Willatt of Reighton Hall, East Yorkshire, to the front pastedown. Manuscript introductory note in ink by W. H. Willatt (the creator, Isaac Willatt's, son) dated 1934, affixed to the front free endpaper, and with additional presentation note to his grandaughter verso. The contents comprising 22 sheets of thick paper, each with a fine pen and ink drawing by Isaac Willatt to the recto (versos blank), numbered and captioned beneath. Condition is very good, the binding square and tight with a couple of minor marks to the upper board and a little rubbing to the extremities. Signed by the artist in black ink to the foot, with additional dedication in blue ink "To Clair and Dorothea with love". Printed label for the publisher Alfred A. Knopf to the verso, with publication details added in pencil: "Endpaper for The Runaway Soldier by: Fruma Gottschalk, artist: Simon Lissim". Condition is very good with some browning to the blank margins (where previously covered by a mount), a minor scuff to the right of the figure at the foot, and the odd faint spot of foxing. The colours remain bright and vivid. A typically joyful, exuberant painting by the Ukrainian-American artist and theatre set designer Simon Lissim (1900-1981). Born in Kiev, Lissim studied art in London and Paris, living in the latter between 1921-1940 where he established a significant reputation as a set designer, becoming closely associated with Sergei Diaghilev, Léon Bakst, and Alexandre Benois. Pen and ink drawing forming the front and rear cover design for Goodall's book The Adventures of Paddy Pork (1968), depicting the eponymous Paddy skipping down a country lane to a fairground (right-hand side/front cover) and a village scene with other anthropomorphised animal inhabitants (left-hand side/rear cover). To the left is a blank space for the book's titles to be placed; here the faint traces of titles in pencil can be seen but have been subsequently rubbed-out by the artist. The image measuring 38 x 14.5cm. Signed by the artist in ink to the lower left ("John S. Goodall"). There are a few discreet pinholes to the margins, otherwise condition is excellent - the image remaining clean and bright.
