There is a stub following the title; this might indicate the removal of a leaf, possibly [A2] - some copies are described as having an Advertisement leaf before the title and this is LACKING here. The front joint is tight and there is no indication of this leaf having been cut out. It appears never to have been bound in. Contemporary tree calf newly rebacked, book-plate of JOHN COAKLEY LETTSOM MD FRS, and that of J[OHN] ELIOT HODGKIN [1829-1912], ALSO an engraved panel tipped onto the rear paste-down advertising Lettsom's work Observations on the Cow-Pock [torn at the lower edge with slight loss affecting the imprint], with this ink-note, probably that of Hodgkin - 'This ingenious satire on the monastic orders treated on the Linnean system went through many editions of which this the second is the best. It is one of the copies which has 6 plates another same date having only 3.' Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt, rebacked, old spine relaid, new label, corners repaired, new end-papers, a very good copy. *GARRISON-MORTON #1675, this edition - a third, posthumous, volume was issued in 1770. Huxham took daily daily weather readings and correlated them with prevailing disease mortality in an effort to prove a link between these phenomena. His tract on Devonshire Colic [GM#2093], first published in 1739, is added to the first volume above. He gave a vivid account of the disorder but ascribed it erroneously to the tartar extracted from apples during the cider-making process. It was shown by Sir George Baker in 1767 that the culprit was the lead used to line cider presses in Devon.
