Oxford: Printed by H Hall for R Davis, 1663. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Ist edition of the Mayne translation 2nd edition of Hickes translation. This edition of Lucian is thus the first substantially complete edition in English. Prior to the publication of the 9 Dialogues translated by Hickes (d. 1631) at Oxford in 1634, only two of Lucian's Dialogues had been translated into English and published in book form. Mayne's translation of fifty had been made in 1638 for the private entertainment of Sir William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, but left in manuscript. When Mayne finally allowed them to be published it appears that an agreement was made to include the Hickes translations as well. The joint volume first appeared 1663. This is the 1st issue with both title pages dated 1663 (the 2nd issue has the date changed to 1664 on the first title page and adds an engraved portrait of Lucian by William Faithorne the Elder). Fine/fine. 1st edition of his first book.  Fine in fine 1st printing dustjacket.  Signed copies are common, with a dozen out there for sale, but years pass between strictly fine dustjacket like this one being offered for sale. A gritty World War I novel, a war started by the last generation of those who believed in the divine right of Kings.  It was made into a 1957 film by Stanley Kubrick (arguably his greatest) that was banned in France because of its authentic depiction of a coverup by French commanding officers deflecting their incompetent stupidity.

Contemporary polished light tan calf, decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, armorial bookplate of the Earl of Ilchester. Light fading to spines and occasional internal toning, else near fine. Sadleir 780.

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 1st edition. Original (publisher's) green cloth, variant stamping to the binding not recorded by Smith, and though variant often means later, this copy can't be later, as it has the 1850 date on both title pages (the key 1st issue point) and 19 of the 20 internal 1st state points listed by Smith, a percentage greater than many copies in the common binding that Smith does describe and picture. Endpapers toned, short tear to the half title mended, foxing to the margins of the plates (more so at the beginning and end) but the text is clean and let me be unmistakable about what this is. One of 100 numbered copies (of a total edition of 126) Signed by the Bishop. Bishop was a perfectionist, who only published 101 poems in her lifetime. The overt of her poetry is a precise photo realistic account of the physical, but a closer analytic examination exposes the reader to humanistic themes of longing, depression and alienation. Since her death in near obscurity, Bishop has been noted among the great American poets of the 20th century.

Very good. 1st edition. 1 of 12 (maybe 13) on fine paper in an unrecorded binding of the publisher's blue paper boards, white paper spine with no label. Top edge rough trimmed, other edges uncut. Front hinge split but holding, top and bottom edge of the spine perished, some scuffs and stains to the boards and wear to extremities. Ownership signature to front free endpaper, toning to the pastedowns and endpapers., else very good. Unrestored. Custom cloth box. 12 copies of Poems were printed on fine paper with a cloth binding designed by Rossetti, specifically intended for author presentation. Then an additional 25 were printed on large paper and bound in blue paper boards like this copy, which, according to Thomas Wise (Ashley IV 131-132), were sold, not held for the author. Portland, 1948. Hardcover. Near fine. Photo album (15 1/4" X 11 1/2") with 115 Weegee like crime scene photographs shot by a Portland Oregon policeman that are equal parts gruesome and businesslike. Many of the photographs have handwritten captions, in white ink, often with gallows humor. Oblong 4to, paper boards, "Photographs" in gilt on the cover, and 75 string-tied pages. The pictures range from 3 1/2" X 2 1/2" to 8" X 10". Edges of the binding worn, else very good, the photos near fine. The album unflinchingly documents various crime scenes visited by a Portland patrolman from Jun. to Oct. 1948. Half of it are images of car crashes, boating disasters, fires, and bee swarms. The other half are a series of macabre images of the recently deceased, some of them murdered. Many, like a murder victim dumped by the side of the road, are disturbing, but it gets worse. Paris: J.M. Lopez, 1872. Very good. Bust portrait of Victor Hugo (3 7/8" X 5 3/8"), mounted on its original card (6 1/4" X 8 3/8"). Inscribed, in black ink (trailing from the photograph down to the card), "A mademoiselle Sarah Bernhardt admiration et reconnaissance. Victor Hugo" (To Miss Sarah Bernhardt admiration and gratitude. Victor Hugo). The card is backed with contemporary framing craft paper and mounted to it is an image of Bernhardt's study, showing this very photograph (a fillet on the former frame) hanging on the wall centered over her desk. Slight edge darkening and slighter spotting to the photograph, but very good, the inscription sharp and unfaded, the card to which it is mounted has some mat burn and a few spots of foxing, its edges cleanly cut, but the lower left corner was cut on a slight angle. Near fine/good. 1st separate edition (unauthorized), and 1st separate issue in English, comprised of sheets from the periodical publication, specially bound up and distributed by Putnam. When advised by Shaw's agent that they had acquired only the serial rights, distribution in this format was halted. Formal book publication in English finally happened in 1916. Near fine original violet cloth, dustjacket chipped and with a split to spine strengthened, else good. An early pencil note on the endpaper promulgates the lie that this is one of 50 copies given to Shaw by the publisher, but this is not a common book and it is scarce in the original jacket.
