May Agnes Fleming (1840 - 1880) was a popular 19th century Canadian author who wrote a number of books, many issued at first as dime novels in serial form. It is not entirely clear when this book was first published--Wright (# 918) records a book 151 p. long titled "Sybil Campbell; or the Queen of the Isle" with an 1863 date which appears to be similar to this book, but shorter in length (it appears under her pseudonymn: Cousin May Carelton). The 1863 publication may have been a first serial issue of this book. This later, longer version is not in Wright, though a number of other books by her are recorded.
