Washington, D.C.: Society for American Archaeology Book. Very Good. Soft cover. pp785-793, tables. Removed from AMERICAN ANTIQUITY. JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY. Volume 48, Number 4, October, 1983. VG. In report covers. May include a first or last copied page. Synopsis: "It is argued that the reliability of archaeological inferences based upon artifactual assemblages is in part a function of the methods used to quantify the assemblages. Using ethnorchaeological data, this proposition is tested by comparing associated artifactual assemblages with the presence or absence of specialists in individual households. Assemblages are quantified in terms of absolute frequency, diversity, and proportional frequency. The correlation between each measure and the presence or absence of specialists is assessed. The analysis reveals assemblage diversity to be one of the strongest and most consistent indicators of specialization and further reveals an inherent flaw characteristic of… Read More

Description:
Louisville: The Filson Club Book. Good. Soft cover. pp89-110. Removed from THE FILSON CLUB HISTORY QUARTERLY, Vol 23, No. 2, April, 1949. G. In report covers. May include a first or last xeroxed page. When one reads the various proposals put forth by the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in 1849, it seems that opposing forces were becoming more and more entrenched and less inclined to compromise. Considering that these forces were in play, not only in Kentucky, but in the country at large, it is not at all surprising that just a few years later, it would all erupt into the Civil War. And, in addition to the slavery question, when one considers the question of states' rights versus Federalism, it seems obvious, from today's perspective, that talking was not going to solve the problem. So I must respectfully disagree with those who say that war doesn't solve anything. Sometimes it seems to be the only way..

The author, David Dick, was born in 1930 in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he was eighteen months old, his father died, and his mother returned home to Bourbon County, Kentucky, with the three children. He worked as a reporter for WHAS Radio and Television in Louisville, and as a newsman for CBS News for fourteen years, retiring in 1985 to his farm at Plum Lick.
