Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company Book. Good. Hardcover. (1942), vii, 205pp, four pages of photos. Extremities worn, else G. In 1942, bomber pilot Harold Dixon and his two crew members, Tony Pastula and Gene Aldrich, crashed their plane into the sea in the South Pacific. For the next thirty four days, while covering a thousand miles, they survived, in a raft measuring four feet by eight feet. They had a pocketknife, a pair of pliers, a pistol, and a length of line, but no food and no water. How they managed to chart their course and survive the ordeal is a fascinating story of courage, ingenuity and will. Of all the seemingly insurmountable hardships they faced, one of the most difficult was the constant exposure to the unmerciful rays of the sun. I remember years ago getting a major sunburn in Florida in two hours on a rather overcast day. I can only imagine what they went through after twelve hours a day for thirty four days..
