1802. Copper-line engraving. 180mm by 130mm (platemark). From John Latham's 'General Synopsis of Birds' 1781-1785, and its Supplements. Latham was the leading English ornithologist of his day and was significant in publishing images and descriptions of Australian birds.Laid paper with watermark.Library stamp on reverse. Very faint off-setting. Platemark faint, title mostly missing, just very top of some letters printed.

1890. Lithograph. 255mm by 320mm (sheet). From an 1890s photolithographic facsimile of the 1857 original edition of 'Victoria Illustrated' published by Sands and Kenny. 'Victoria Illustrated' is Gill's most famous work, and is celebrated for his lively views of Melbourne, Geelong and goldfield scenes. One small spot outside the image area.

1846. Lithograph. 220mm by 135mm (sheet). The Rajah Muda Hassim was a Malay governor of Sarawak who turned to British adventurer James Brooke for assistance in quelling the rebellion in Sarawa. A few foxing spots. Light crease. Break in paper on left hand edge.

1835. Steel-engraving. 490mm by 605mm (platemark). The engraving depicts Rebecca being abducted by Brian de Bois-Guilbert from the castle of Torquilstone (from Walter Scott's 'Ivanhoe'). Bears the blind stamp of the 'Societe des Arts'.Cogniet's painting exhibited at the Galerie Lebrun in 1829 and in the Salon of 1831. The painting is now in the Wallace Collection, London.Leon Cogniet was a French historical and portrait painter. In 1812, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guerin at the same time as Delacroix and Gericault. In 1817 he won the Prix de Rome and was a resident at the Villa Medici from 1817 to 1822. He decorated several ceilings in the Louvre and the Halle de Godiaque in the Hotel de Ville, Paris, and a chapel in the church of Madeleine.

ST Gill (1818-1880) was one of the most important colonial painters and chroniclers of life during the gold rush. Represented in all major art gallery collections. CONDITION : Very faint crease top left corner of sheet.

1802. Copper-line engraving with original hand-colouring. 85mm by 150mm (sheet) (3 1/4" by 5 1/2"). From 'The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Compleat Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature'. The magazine depicted flora and fauna from around the world, often borrowing images from other sources. It was published between 1799 and 1802 by Harrison, Cluse & Co. Accompanied with the original text that describes the illustration. CONDITION : One light crease top right corner.

1850. Lithograph with hand-colouring. 165mm by 215mm (sheet). Toy theatre lithograph published by John Redington (1819-1876). John Redington ran a shop at 208 Hoxton Old Town, better known today as 73 Hoxton Street. His main business was printing, bookbinding and selling tobacco. He also prepared prints for plays for the toy theatre, more properly known as 'juvenile drama'. Almost all the plays were written specifically for the toy theatre with a few notable exceptions such as Oliver Twist. The stage sets would include trap doors and windows just like the 'real' theatre. Benjamin Pollock took over the business in 1873. CONDITION : A few little nicks at the edges of the sheet.
