Description:
Illinois, 1922. Very Good. [Railroad] [Vernacular] [Illinois] Really Large Illinois and Greater Midwest Vernacular/Occupational Photo Album, 1911-1922 Black leather screw-post album with 'Photographs' in gilt on front. Wear to front and back boards. The first and last pages in album are loose, which for a 100-year-old album 3.5 inches thick is remarkable. The album is 11.5 inches wide by 7.25 inches tall. Black album pages are chipped to edges. Photos all with photo corners, most of which are intact. A few missing photos. Maybe 5% of the photos are mounted upside-down. A decent number of images have dates written on them. There are also some captions, though these appear inconsistently throughout. This album holds approximately 797 photos; of those, 665 are 4.25 x 2.5 inches; 117 are around 3 x 2 inches, and 15 measure 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Very good condition. With several hundred rail-oriented photos, this mammoth album could almost be termed an occupational album. Interspersed are many vernacular… Read More

Sacramento, California, 1850. [Territorial California] Rare California Territorial Circular Date Stamp And Manuscript Note to Territorial Governor Peter Burnett, July 16, 1850. 1pp. 6.25 x 10.5 inches. Manuscript note written on thin blue paper unevenly trimmed and folded into a stampless letter. Previous folds with light toning. Note written on top of address. Stampless folded envelope addressed to "To the Governor of California, San Jose, Alta California" with a bold and striking circular date stamp from Sacramento 16 July at a rate of 121/2 cents. According to the "American Stampless Cover Catalog Volume 1" the circular date stamp of this fashion was used prior to statehood on September 9, 1850. Peter Hardeman Burnett served as the Territorial Governor from the capitol on San Jose. There likely was an enclosed note or additional letter sheet (verso is blank with no enclosure present) yet the gist was a request from an L.F. Harris of Shasta County applying for the appointment of a judgeship from… Read More

P., circa 1881, 5.25 x 3.5 inches, unpaginated bifolio 18 pp. Intricately embossed brown boards, gold stamped lettering to front; some light scuffing to back, corners lightly rubbed, else clean; interior 18 pages of finely detailed duotone lithograph plates of Colorado railroads and scenery; pages lightly toned; last page has come loose from where it was glued to rear board. Overall good condition. Scarce; no copies found in commerce or OCLC as of January 2024. A pretty little illustrated view book of Colorado's scenic beauty and early railroads. I could not find much information on the publisher or date of this book; someone sold another copy on Worthpoint which was dated 1881 in pencil and print. The publisher appears to be W. H. Lawrence & Co., a Denver-based publisher active in the 1880s, according to historycolorado.org. Furthermore, Heritage Auctions had a different… Read More

Description:
1898. Ray-Richardson "Starvation Winter in the Klondike" Archive 1897-1898. Circle City and Fort Klondike, Alaska. Archival collection consisting of telegrams, letters, financial documents, and newspaper clippings all pertaining to the Klondike Gold Rush, especially regarding the winter of 1897-1898 in and around Circle City and Fort Yukon Alaska, and Dawson, Yukon Territory. About 3 inches of documents. Expected wear but overall, the archive is in very good condition and is generally legible and organized. A full inventory will be provided with the collection along with transcriptions for a number of the important holograph letters. The Klondike Gold Rush triggered a migration of an estimated 100,000 people into southeast Alaska headed towards Yukon Territory and the Klondike. More than half those who left for the Klondike never made it, turning around. Regardless, such a surge of people in remote interior Yukon/Alaska going into the winter of 1897, when no supplies could be moved, left a huge… Read More

Box has 1/2 inch closed tear to one flap, corners slightly rubbed, otherwise clean; photos inside clean, unmarked; also includes a paper order form. Very good condition. Beautiful photographs of the scenery between Seattle and Skagway, including glaciers, icebergs, mountains, and more. A nice item for Pacific Northwest enthusiasts. I found very little information on the Scenic Photo Publishing Co.; they appear to have operated in the 1920s and 1930s, and their most commonly reproduced photograph is of two shrunken heads. Worthy of further research. No copies found in OCLC or commerce as of January 2024.
