Description:
The Oakwood Press, 2021 Book. New. Soft cover. The book begins with an account of Connemara, in the west of Ireland, and the various schemes put forward to link its two main settlements, Galway and Clifden. The first of these was proposed in 1860, but it was over 30 years before the line was built by the Midland Great Western Railway who operated it until 1925 when the government shied away from Nationalisation but merged all railways operating only in Irish Free State into Great Southern Railways. The line closed in 1935. Given the full Oakwood treatment there are eleven chapters including Train Services, Locomotives and Rolling Stock and Road Services . Appendices include the Shantalla Siding, Tourism and the Recess Hotel, The Ulster & Connaught Light Railway and The Marconi Railway, Clifden . The illustrations comprise photographs of stations, signals, and tickets as well as maps, charts, diagrams and advertisements..

Description:
The O'Brien Press, 2023 Book. New. Hardcover. A fascinating history of an ancient place. From its first mention in legend in the Book of Invasions, through early Christian monastic settlements, castles and grand residences, Fenian raids and the Battle of Tallaght, there has been huge change in Tallaght. In more recent times it has seen car and motorcycle racing, an aerodrome, the rise and fall of a chocolate factory and a pioneering telecommunications firm. The massive population explosion and rapid modernisation towards the end of the twentieth century means this once-tiny village in Dublin's foothills is now home to over 80,000 people. Richly illustrated with period photographs and original drawings by Michael O'Brien, Albert Perris tells the often-surprising story of Tallaght. .

Description:
Helion and Company, 2021 Book. New. Soft cover. The history of Ireland is complex, and has been plagued with religious, political, and military influences that have created divisions within its population. Ireland's experience throughout the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars highlighted and intensified such divisions that have influenced Irish society into the twenty-first century. Rebellion, Invasion and Occupation is an analysis of the British Army in Ireland during the period 1793 to 1815, which proved to be a critical era in British and Irish history. The consequences of the events and government policies of that time helped to determine the social and political divisions within Ireland for the following two centuries. The intention of this book is to provide an analysis of the military history of Ireland during this time, focusing on the influences, experiences, and reputations of the various elements that comprised the Irish military forces. The militia, yeomanry, fencible, and… Read More

Description:
Penguin Ireland, 2011 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A vivid chronicle of the first blow in the Irish revolution - by the people who were there In 1947 the Bureau of Military History was established by the Irish government to record the experiences of those who took part in the fight for independence. In 1959, the results of this research - including 1,773 'witness statements' - were placed in 83 steel boxes and locked into a strongroom in Government Buildings. Rebels, edited by one of Ireland's top young historians, brings the best of the surviving accounts of the Easter Rising together into a comprehensive, accessible and thrillingly readable telling of that much-debated insurrection, the first in a series of events that brought about Irish independence. From the witnesses' recollections of their schooling and other childhood influences to their accounts of what happened at Easter 1916, Rebels tells this famous story in a new and exhilarating way. Description:
Wordwell, 2009 Book. New. Hardcover. This volume includes an appreciation of Barry's career and the contributions are organised into thematic sections reflecting major areas of his own research interests. Papers on the archaeology of wetlands are followed by a series on technology and artefacts. The key issue of contacts and communication is covered and there is a section on one of Barry's long-term interests - La Tene art. There are a number of papers on life and death in later prehistory followed by others on hillforts and enclosures, an interest of Barry's from his early graduate research days. Appropriately the volume concludes with a historical perspective looking at archaeological events and characters in twentieth-century Ireland..

Tiernaur Oral History Group, 2018 Book. New. Hardcover. This book contains first hand accounts of the revolutionary decade in Newport County Mayo. In the century that has passed since the 1916 Rising, War of Independence and Civil War in Ireland, much has been written about Pearse and his comrades. Description:
Allen Lane, 2024 Book. New. Hardcover. A way of life that once encompassed most of humanity is vanishing in one of the greatest transformations of our time: the eclipse of the rural world by the urban. In this new history of peasantry, Patrick Joyce tells the story of this lost world and its people. In contrast to the usual insulting stereotypes, we discover a rich and complex culture: traditions, songs, celebrations and revolts, across Europe from the plains of Poland to the farmsteads and villages of Italy and Ireland, through the nineteenth century to the present day. Into this passionate history, written with exquisite care, Joyce weaves remarkable individual stories, including those of his own Irish family, and looks at how peasant life has been remembered - and misremembered - in contemporary culture. This is a people whose voice is vastly underrepresented in human history. Yet for Joyce, we are all the children of peasants, who must respect the experience of our ancestors. This is… Read More
