Sledge of Atlanta responding to her comments about a piece he did on his Emmy Award-winning NBC program The Huntley-Brinkley Show on African American voting patterns in the 1964 presidential election, which saw Lyndon Johnson handily defeat Barry Goldwater. Brinkley writes in part, “I regret that brief story I reported Wednesday night has been widely misunderstood, perhaps because I did not explain it thoroughly enough. . . Of course it is true that Negroes are voting in increasing numbers in many places in the South, as we all know.” He goes on to say, “I did not say all the Negroes were denied the right to vote. Only nine copies of this World War I conversation book for soldiers found in OCLC. Michelon, of the French Army, writes in the Preface that his book “comprises the necessary elements of the daily field conversation of the Franco-American Armies as well as guidance for those traveling in France.”

A nice presentation and record of the event in Newport, the sailing capital of the world.

Early appearance of Alberto Rios (finalist for National Book Award in 2002); other poets include Bukowski friend Gerald Locklin, Kirk Robertson (founder and editor of Scree magazine and Duck Down Press), Michael C. Ford (Kenneth Patchen disciple and co-editor of the journal The Sunset Palms Hotel), Richard Weaver (former editor of The Black Warrior Review), Ronald Koertge, R. Douglas King, Larry Samson, Ryde Sainte-Pierre, Nancy Mairs, Kerry McDermott, Marvin Schwartz, Marvin Brook, Jimm Ingolio, Elliot Fried, and editor RVargas, who describes himself as “a young Chicano poet born and raised in the LA suburbs.” The first three issues were under Tequila Press Poetry Review before changing the name to Tequila Review (1978-1980). Three decades later, Vargas launched The Más Tequila Review in 2010. Uncommon. None in commerce and only 2 found in OCLC (NYPL and Delaware).

Typed Letter SIGNED “Ted” dated Dec. 15, 1960 and written to one John R. Pierce, an inventor and engineer and director of electronics research at AT&T’s Bell Laboratories who, along with Arthur C. Clarke, is considered a “father of the communications satellite.” Pierce (also known by his pseudonym J.J. Coupling), may be best known for having coined the word “transistor” and for his work on NASA’s Echo I project in 1960 which led to the Telstar satellite project. Pierce published 14 nonfiction works—including Theory and Design of Electron Beams (1949)—and wrote articles for Astounding Science Fiction while also publishing science fiction stories, including “Relics of the Earth” in Hugo Gernsback’s Science Wonder Stories and “Invariant” in Astounding Science-Fiction. Hugo and Nebula Award winner Sturgeon writes to Pierce complimenting him on the success of the Echo satellite, thanking him for his assistance in devising names used in Venus plus X, and mentioning that he is also… Read More
