VG. 10 x 17.5 cm contemporary, full leather with five raised bands ad gilt stamped double line border to the front and rear, viii 132+ 48pp tables. The binding is firm but there is some loss to the spine tips and rubbing to the corners edges and boards. There is a split in the leather at the head of the front joint measuring 2cm and faint initials visible across the centre of the text block. The binding remains firm. Internally, there are notes on the endpapers and a tipped in note to the front paste down and another set of notes laid in at the rear. Internally there is some light marking but the book is well preserved considering its age. A means of dating significant dates according to the Julian calendar. Frederick Warne & Co., 1903 1903. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG+. Deluxe edition. 11 x 14 cm blue cloth with ornate gilt stamped decoration and small spade shaped pictorial onlay to font board. All edges gilt, pictorial endpapers (double page endpapers repeated twice, as called for for this edition), 85[1]pp printed on one side only. A very good copy with a little light rubbing to the corners and spine. Name in pencil to the half title page and very light finger marks to p.52 and p.62/63, otherwise it appears beautifully clean and fresh inside. This deluxe edition replaced the floral fabric deluxe edition. The title page is dated 1903 and Linder (p.423) notes: ' [the floral fabric pattern] edition was replaced in October 1904 by one having a gilt decorated cloth cover with gold lettering. VG+. A single proof sheet of the replacement colour illustrations for The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, replacing illustrations lost by the publisher. One quarter of the sheet has been excised. The illustrations are numbered as per the original 85 page format. According to Linder, Beatrix Potter recalled 'Some B Bunny's were temporarily mislaid and I supplied three or four new ones for fresh blocks, duplicates, very little to the originals.' He goes on to write: 'With the exception of the picture where "little Benjamin Bunny slid down into the road, and set off with a hop, skip and a jump", in which the figure of Benjamin Bunny was larger in the new picture, and also the drawing if the cat, whose tail had been shortened, the redrawn pictures were practically the same as the old ones. The book comes with 5/- net price. A VG+ book, the larger of two versions of the first edition, with fading on the boards where there is loss to the dust jacket. Internally, clean and bright and without names or inscriptions but with very light spotting to the endpapers. There is also a small drip mark of � cm on pp38 and 39. The dust jacket has some significant loss with a 10 � cm x 5cm triangular section missing from the front panel and 1 � cm missing from the spine head and 3 cm from the foot. There is also lesser loss from the spine edge corners a number of closed tears and a little associated creasing. A scarce volume, particularly with a dust jacket in any condition. The spine is toned ands rubbed at the tips with minor loss and small splits of under 1cm in the joints at the head of the spine. There is a little rubbing and pushing to the corners and a 3mm ink spot in the top spine edge corner of the upper board and general handling wear.
