1854. Steel-engraving with original hand-colouring. 375mm by 270mm (sheet). With decorative border surrounds and vignettes including a view of Sydney Cove looking west and a scene on the River Murray and "Black Boys". Tooley 1223.

1818. Colour-printed stipple engraving. 210mm by 130mm (sheet). From Francois Pierre Chaumeton's 'Flore Medicale' which portrayed a variety of flowers, trees and herbs which could be used for treating illnesses. The engravings were produced during the great period of French colour printing using the stipple-engraving process pioneered by the great botanical artist Pierre-Jospeh Redoute. The artist is the celebrated Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840), pupil of Redoute. He is considered one of the greatest floral and botanical illustrators during the Napoleonic Era and afterwards. CONDITION : One tiny spot in the image.

1857. Chromolithograph. 255mm by 175mm (sheet). Chromolithograph from Louis Van Houtte's 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' (Flora from the Nurseries and Gardens of Europe), which was published between 1845 and 1883. Louis van Houtte (1810-1876) was a pioneering Belgian horticulturalist. After an extended plant hunting trip to South America in 1834-6, he returned to Belgium and established a nursery near Ghent. This was to become one of the largest and most successful nurseries in Europe. In 1845 he founded the horticultural journal, 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' with Charles Lemaire. This was published from an office in the middle of the Van Houtte nursery. It was lavishly illustrated with chromolithographs of the plants for sale there. These prints were made by L. Stroobant, G. Severeyns, and Pieter de Pannemaeker, well-known lithographers who specialized in botanical illustration.Small waterstain at top and bottom of sheet, not affecting the image. 'Tantrum, the Property of Mr Blake' Portrait of a racehorse in profile to right, with a groom standing at his head and a jockey approaching from the left carrying a whip and bridle; corner of the brick stable to left. Sayer was a famous publisher/printer of fine engravings.One vertical line. Some rubbing in title. A couple of small areas of rubbing.

Steel-engraving, 1874. 110mm by 175mm (image) 210mm by 270mm (sheet). From 'Australia' by Edwin Carton Booth. Prout was an English artist who emigrated to Sydney in 1840. From 1844-1848 he lived and worked in Tasmania. A number of his works were used for engravings in Edwin Carton Booth's 'Australia'. CONDITION : A couple of tiny spots outside the image area.

From Jacques Arago's 'Souvenirs d'un aveugle, Voyage Autour du Monde', 1839.Jacques Etienne Victor Arago was a French writer, artist and explorer. He joined Louis de Freycinet on his 1817 voyage around the world aboard the ship Uranie, Some light foxing and toning at the edges of the sheet.

1778. Copper-line engraving. 235mm by 180mm (platemark). 'Plante a The de la Nouvelle Zelande' Depicts Leptospermum scoparium (Myrtaceae). The engraving is believed to be after the original drawing by G Forster, though it was unattributed.From a French edition of 'A voyage towards the South Pole, and round the World. Performed in His Majesty's ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. Bessa is considered one of the greatest 19th century flower artists and, along side Pierre Joseph Redoute, mastered the art of stipple engraving. CONDITION : Faint foxing spot above image, within the platemark.

Napoleon included a number of artists in his army who were instructed to record Egyptian society. The resulting works formed an important historical account of Egypt at that time, with detailed and accurate images including monuments and cities.
