1818. Colour-printed stipple engraving. 210mm by 130mm (sheet). From Francois Pierre Chaumeton's 'Flore Medicale' which portrayed a variety of flowers, trees and herbs which could be used for treating illnesses. The engravings were produced during the great period of French colour printing using the stipple-engraving process pioneered by the great botanical artist Pierre-Jospeh Redoute. The artist is the celebrated Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840), pupil of Redoute. He is considered one of the greatest floral and botanical illustrators during the Napoleonic Era and afterwards. CONDITION : One tiny spot in the image.

Chromolithograph from Louis Van Houtte's 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' (Flora from the Nurseries and Gardens of Europe), which was published between 1845 and 1883. Louis van Houtte (1810-1876) was a pioneering Belgian horticulturalist. After an extended plant hunting trip to South America in 1834-6, he returned to Belgium and established a nursery near Ghent. This was to become one of the largest and most successful nurseries in Europe. In 1845 he founded the horticultural journal, 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' with Charles Lemaire. This was published from an office in the middle of the Van Houtte nursery. It was lavishly illustrated with chromolithographs of the plants for sale there. These prints were made by L. Stroobant, G.
