Book bound in red cloth with gilt titles, clean bright and square, a little patch of fading at the spine head. Contents unmarked, appears unread, almost as new.

Full brown leather bindings with gilt decorations along spines and gilt decorations around the edges of the boards. Rubbed and worn, but with good professional restoration work. Hinges tight, marbled end papers. Faded ink inscription on verso of front marbled end papers. Pages smooth and clean, a very good tidy set. May incur additional postage charges overseas.

London: Children's High Level Group, 2008. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Highly ornate book, unblemished, presented in burgundy velvet bag. This is housed inside a box disguised as an old leather bound book, with gilt titles and raised bands along the spine and title and decorations imprinted on the front board. The sides appear as gilt page edges. There are some small points of wear along the very outer edges. Also inserted into a pocket in the box is an envelope containing 10 illustrated cards. The whole is presented in a cream slide-on paper sleeve with "This Side Up" printed on the top. A collector's item.

Thought to originate in the 11th century, this is a 'psychological' tale of love and seduction among aristocratic society of the time and is described as 'the highest innacle of Japanese literature'. Bound in brownish/purple cloth with gilt title on the spine, some small marks, spine ends pressed and a little chipped, spine a touch faded but the gilt remains bright. There is a split along the side of the spine revealing webbing, otherwise robust and square. Hinge and text block firm, no inscriptions. The closed page edges are spotty and some foxing to the title page thereafter pages are generally smooth clean and clear although one or two spots creeping over from edges. A good sound, tidy copy.
