Description:
San Francisco: Alternative Foundations, 1972. First edition (there was an extremely similar book copyrighted in 1971 but as each have their own copyright they must each be considered first editions). Part of "The Modern Utopian" series published in the early 1970s. Quarto. 231, [1] pp. Profusely illustrated from photographs and with illustrations by Jackie Baks. Publisher's photographically illustrated wrappers. One spot to upper right corner (not egregious), previous owner has put a check mark next to five of the articles in the list of contents, old crease to lower front corner. A very good if slightly aging copy. One of the very few books about the commune movement of the early 1970s that coincided with the hippie movement in general. While virtually all of these communes are now defunct it does represent a time in American history that was quite revolutionary. Indeed in many cases one can barely find any information at all regarding these communes outside this series of books as they were… Read More

Description:
New York: G. P. Putnam, 1862. Third edition in which the publisher changed the title from Undercurrents of Wall Street). Octavo. 428, 17[1], pp. Publisher's blind ruled green cloth with gilt spine lettering, brown endpapers. A very good copy. Merited a 23-page review in the July 1963 issue of The North American Review. "Mr. Kimball combines in an unusual degree literary talent, and a knowledge of mercantile affairs as transacted in the daily life of city and country. He has, consequently, been able to inaugurate a new style of novel, and may fairly be considered the creator of the Romance of Business. In his hands it takes a form as distinct as the naval, military, sentimental, sensational or any other class into which the popular fictions of the day naturally fall." Inscribed by Page to Leland N. Littlefield. In March 1913, Page was appointed United States ambassador to the United Kingdom by President Woodrow Wilson,[2] whom Page had befriended in 1882 when Wilson was a young lawyer starting out in Atlanta.[4] Page was one of the key figures involved in bringing the United States into World War I on the Allied side. A proud Southerner, he admired his British roots and believed that the United Kingdom was fighting a war for democracy. As ambassador to Britain, he defended British policies to Wilson and helped to shape a pro-Allied slant in the President and in the United States as a whole. One month after Page sent a message to Wilson, the U.S.… Read More

N.p.: N.p., 2002. Ceramic fetish of human, animal and sea form. Measures 7 x 2 1/2 (W) x 1 1/4 inches. Signed and dated on upper left side. A powerful image in wonderful condition. "The ceramic sculpture of Gary Spinosa is evocative of ancient idols and totemic ritual. Combining human, animal, and architectural forms, Spinosa seeks to materialize spiritual energy through his mysterious, yet serenely benevolent figures. For the artist, animals contain the keys to a universal language that bonds humanity at its most primal level. These sculptures, from towering grand constructions to diminutive “stones,” are imbued with deep sanctity and stillness, a sometimes disquieting mystery, myth, and perhaps even superstition. A review in “Cleveland Scene” noted, “Gary Spinosa's sculptures hark back to the days when art didn't just look pretty or express the individual's feelings, but served as a reminder of a higher power” (Canton Museum). Gary Spinosa is an American Postwar & Contemporary… Read More

Description:
New Haven: New Haven Public Schools, 1964. First edition. Folio (18 1/4 x 18 inches). Comprised of 10 original photographs of urban New Haven by Reginald Jackson. Plate list tipped into rear. No text other than that on the front cover and its verso. Spiral-bound thick wrapper. Front wrapper with silver-fishing and with a tear on the upper front corner. No copies located by OCLC. Apparently, there were to be 10 of these publications, each with 10 photographs. We can find no record of any of them anywhere. In the introduction we read: "You are part of a pilot project unprecedented in urban curriculum materials development. We value your involvement and commitment to help make these study prints a potent force for helping today's students become more fully functioning individuals." An early fruit of the civil rights movement.

Slat Lake City: Press of the F. W. Gardiner Co., [1913]. First edition. Twelvemo. 142, [2] pp. Publisher's red wrappers bearing a representation of Lopez on the front. First leaf (stating proceeds will be given to the widows of the men killed by Lopez) starting to pull away from staples (though still very secure), small hole in upper margin of rear blank endpaper, spine somewhat sunned. Overall, a very good copy. On November 21, 1913, Raphael "Red" Lopez shot and killed a fellow miner named Juan Valdez in Bingham, Utah. A four-man posse was soon on his trail, and they caught up with him at about 4:30 p.m. on the same day. Unfortunately for the officers, they rode their horses right into an ambush in which three of them were killed and one limped back to report the slaughter. News of the shootout quickly spread. Lawmen from all over Utah assembled to participate in what would become the state's largest manhunt in history. Altogether, the new posse consisted of about 200 men, both civilians and… Read More
