Illustrated with 67 monochrome plates. The sole publication of the English artists and architects who formed Unit One. Unit One consisted of the sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, the painters John Armstrong, John Bigge, Edward Burra, Tristram Hillier, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson and Edward Wadsworth and the architects Wells Coates and Colin Lucas. Unit One opposed the English romantic tradition of working 'by the light of nature' and advocated a strong 'structural purpose' in both painting and architecture. London.: Frith Street Gallery., 1989.. Original publisher's black printed boards.. Oblong 8vo.. Illustrated with thirty-nine monochrome reproduction sketches and a tipped-in signed and dated pencil drawing. From the edition limited to 500 copies, this copy with a signed drawing by de Francia tipped-in to front free endpaper. 'Unlike Goya's Disasters of War to which this series is deeply indebted the drawings give no indication of specific places, countries, or events. This is deliberate. Those at the beginning deal with themes of the violation of innocence. The final drawings affirm the possibility of a different future brought into being by the children of a new generation.' Description:
London.: Whitefriars Press Ltd., 1958.. Original printed wrappers, rear cover detached, otherwise good.. 8vo.. Between 1953 and 1962, while establishing his own architectural practice, Theo Crosby acted as Technical Editor of Architectural Design magazine, which was seeking to bring a more youthful, vital and progressive approach to the subject than the previously dominant Architectural Review. Whilst at Architectural Design, Crosby attached himself to the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, attended meetings of the Independent Group there, and was particularly impressed by the group's discussions of the impact of mass communication and information theory on architecture and design. It was Crosby who suggested, and steered to completion, what would be the Independent Group's swansong - the watershed exhibition This Is Tomorrow at London's Whitechapel Gallery. In Architectural Design Crosby wrote that the exhibition was "evidence of attempts towards a new sort of order, a way towards that… Read More
