Frankfort: Kentucky Historical Society Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1971, 302pp, index, bibliography. VG+ in VG+ dj. This work first appeared in thirty installments in The Western Journal and Civilian, a St. Louis magazine, running from February, 1853 until December, 1855. It was to be a history of the area from the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, in 1748, to the Peace of Ghent, 1815. The work was cut short by the author's untimely death in a railroad disaster in 1855, thus the present volume covers the history only to 1791. Edited by G. Glenn Clift and Hambleton Tapp..

Washington, D.C.: GPO Magazine. Very Good. Soft cover. pp439-458. Removed from ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1913. VG. In plastic report covers. The author points out some staggering statistics as to the astronomical numbers of insects that would survive to consume all of mankind's crops were it not for birds. Of course, he mentions pesticides, which were not nearly so prevalent in 1913, but which were already having unintended consequences. But with today's advances in agronomy, I doubt that those who produce our food are relying heavily on birds for insect control. But he also points out the value of birds in controlling rodents, and controlling parasites on livestock, scavenging, in controlling the over growth of unwanted plants, as a food source for many, and finally the aesthetic value of birds..

Washington, D.C.: GPO Magazine. Good. Soft cover. pp271-279. Removed from ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, JULY, 1894. VG. In plastic report covers. From the introduction: "The question is frequently asked, 'How can latitude change?' There are two ways, obviously. First, we may imagine that a portion of the earth slips on the surface of the globe, due, say, to earthquake shock. Then if the movement of the mass has been toward the equator the latitude of that place is decreased; if toward the pole of the earth the latitude is increased. But suppose that some forces at work on the earth cause it to revolve about a new axis, then we have at once a new equator, and the latitudes of all points on the earth's surface change except at those places where the old and new equator intersect.".

[The explanation of how the moon affects the tides.] For he finds that the tides at different places vary not only in time and in range, but also in character of rise and fall. Quite apart from differences in time and in range which may be regarded as merely differences in degree, it is found that tides present striking differences in kind. There is, in fact, an almost bewildering variety in tides.".
