A small, scarce book by jobbing Scottish writer Robert Menzies Fergusson, whose other written output includes a cyclist travelogue through Holland and Belgium, a volume of Ochil fairy tales and a book of poetry. This book seems to have been produced owing to an excess of (ill-)feeling on Fergusson’s part - he views vagrants as ‘regular loafers, lookers for work without the desire to find it, migratory tramps who accost every traveller they meet and glibly tell a made-up story of dire misfortune, with which the prey upon the kindly feelings of the unthinking, who hand them a few coppers in order to get rid of their melancholy pleadings’ (p.12). [Greenock?]: [Privately Printed], 1923. SOLE EDITION, 8vo, pp. 38, [2]. Original blue boards backed in blue and white cloth, front board printed in black. A little rubbing to corners, boards slightly bowed. An unrecorded collection of verse by James Snoddy (1840-1922), privately printed as a memorial to him by his son Thomas Gillespie Snoddy. The verses are mostly religious, although a few concern the shipbuilding industry of the Clyde where the author seems to have worked, with one commemorating a 1908 industrial dispute and lock-out among woodworkers, and another memorialising a young apprentice joiner. The poet seems not to have troubled the historical record, and even his dates are taken from the preface here, in which his son writes ‘Some of these verses we have known for many years,’ suggesting he was writing and publishing for a small pool of immediate family and close friends. In any case, we have traced no record of book or author in any library catalogues worldwide.

London: Printed for J. Walter, 1784. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [ii], lxx, 113, [1]. Untrimmed and partially unopened in modern marbled boards backed in buckram, black label to spine. Some light soiling. A treatise by the successful expatriate Scots bookseller John Knox (1720-1790) 'which argued—understandably—that transport links in the highlands had to be improved, and advocated the construction of what became the Crinan and Caledonian canals' (ODNB). Knox was also deeply concerned with the fishing industry and successfully advocated numerous policies to promote it in Scotland, including establishing fishing stations in the Highlands and Islands. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, red morocco labels. Some spotting and toning. Rubbed and darkened, marbled paper worn at board edges. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Orr of Barrowfield to front pastedowns, bequest label to flyleaves, ownership inscription of John Orr to title-pages, small library stamps to verso of title-pages. The first edition of this ‘immensely popular’ (ODNB) and many-times reprinted account of the physician John Moore’s (1729-1802) travels in Europe, where he met Voltaire and Frederick the Great. A sequel, concerning his visit to Italy, also followed later. ESTC T64314.

Edinburgh: Mundell and Son, 1790. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. viii, [ii], 55, [1], 262 + folding chart. Contemporary calf, spine divided by gilt rules, red morocco label. Small handling tear to chart. Extremities a little rubbed and bumped. Armorial bookplate of Charles MacKenzie of Kilcoy to front pastedown, another ink inscription to front free endpaper partly crossed through. The ‘Late General Election’ in the title is that which took place in June and July 1790, the prefatory advertisement explaining the scope of the volume being dated November of that year. It contains the full results of the general election for the Houses of Commons of Great Britain and Ireland, a full list of peers and the roll of freeholders of Scottish counties and how they voted, the concepts of a secret ballot and universal suffrage being as of yet some way off. A scarce publication, with ESTC listing copies in no more than a dozen locations. ESTC T83148.

Edinburgh: Published by A. Constable & Co., 1820. FIRST EDITION, 2 vols. 8vo, pp. [vi], 128, 133-192, [52]; [148] + engraved title-pages, 97 tissue-guarded plates and 2 folding maps. Text continuous despite pagination. Contemporary russia, boards bordered with gilt rules enclosing blind rolls, spines divided by gilt rolls, second and fourth compartments lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, marbled edges. Bindings just a little rubbed and scratched, spines sunned. Ownership inscription of John Stewart to flyleaf of vol. 1 dated May [18]52. An attractive set of engravings by father and son team James and Henry Storer, which is preceded in the first volume by a substantial history of the city of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh: M. MacDonald, 1960. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. 26, [2]. Original textured orange card printed in black. Just a touch of soiling to wrappers. Presentation inscription to flyleaf: ‘The Richardson from The Smith’. Smith’s poem was commissioned by the BBC for the bicentenary of the birth of Robert Burns. This copy was presented to BBC producer Robin Richardson.

[Ipswich]: Printed by W. S. Cowell Ltd, 1965. 8vo, pp. [16] including original colour-printed card wrappers. ‘Ticket’ loosely inserted. Just a touch of soiling to wrappers. A full-colour promotional booklet designed for Guinness by advertising agency S. H. Benson to extoll the virtues of their stout; this one (they were issued yearly) taking the form of a guidebook to the fictitious ‘Bedsyde Manor,’ with a ticket for this attraction loosely inserted. The punning subtitle plays upon the brewery’s long-running slogan ‘Guinness is good for you.’ The text is by Stanley Penn, the illustrations, John Vernon Lord.

Contemporary vellum, boards framed with double gilt rules, spine divided by double gilt rules, black morocco labels, other compartments with central decorative lozenge tools gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. A few minor spots. Binding just slightly soiled.

London: Printed by J. Davis... and sold by Vernor and Hood, 1800. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. xii, 478, [2, ads] + 1 engraved plate. Contemporary half russia, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt rolls, second compartment gilt-lettered direct, the rest with central gilt tools. Lightly toned throughout. Boards rubbed, corners a touch worn, front joint just cracking slightly but strong. Small bookseller’s ticket (I.M. Richardson, Cornhill) to front pastedown. The Austrian missionary Paulinus of St. Bartholomew (1748-1806), or Paolino da San Bartolomeo (or various other names), made several important contributions to Orientalist studies, among them the first grammar of Sanskrit printed in Europe. This more general account of his travels and residence in India between 1776 and 1789 was first published in Italian in 1796 and translated into German with notes in 1798, with that version is here translated into English. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1946. 8vo, pp. 248. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow dustjacket printed in purple and black. A touch of spotting. Dustjacket somewhat soiled, a few edge-tears repaired internally with tape. The second edition of Lindsay’s most famous and influential novel, which CS Lewis called ‘shattering, intolerable, and irresistible’. It was first published in 1920, and was, per Gollancz’s introduction, ‘a plain flop’ (p.5) with only 596 copies sold and 834 remaindered. This was the first time it was reprinted, the inaugural novel in Gollancz’s series ‘The Connoisseur’s Library of Strange Fiction’, which ran to four titles, half of them by Lindsay.
