This is a reprint of the scarce original edition that describes the author's life among the Chippewa of the Saginaw Bay region of Michigan. Mary was from Massachusetts and married a Chippewa Indian, Joseph Cabay, in 1863 who was in ill health; an unusual mixed race marriage in that era. Shortly thereafter they left for the Saginaw Bay Indian village where Joseph soon died of the illness that had been lingering since before their marriage. Mary then married his cousin, Peter Sagatoo, and she describes her life as a teacher, her observations of the Chippewa with whom she lived, and their beliefs, customs, etc. This is a facsimilie reprint of the original 1897 edition published by Charles A.
