[Philadelphia]: J.B. Lippincott, 1890. 72pp, plus 16 tissue guarded photographic plates depicting Philadelphia scenes, fold-out map; in half brown morocco with gilt lettering and brown cloth. Library stamps to endpapers, binding worn along corners and edges. Very Good. Issued as a “souvenir of the visit of the International American Conference to the city of Philadelphia, November 10-13, 1889.” The Conference was a meeting of delegates from North and South American countries. This book was apparently issued as a souvenir of their visit to Philadelphia, the terminus of a northeastern states tour undertaken by delegates. Gilt-stamped to the lower corner of the binding is the name “Andrew Carnegie,” who was a delegate to the conference. The digitized University of Michigan copy of this book does not have a name stamped on this corner. It is possible that this is a unique copy specially bound for Carnegie himself.

London: Cassell, 1934. 8vo, beige cloth with silver spine lettering, with dust jacket; 345pp. Foxing to endpapers, pages tanned, binding faded and discolored. The front panel of the dust jacket from another copy has been tipped in before the front endpaper. Jacket rubbed with tiny chips along corners, “war costs” tag tipped onto spine of jacket. Very Good in a Very Good+ jacket. The imaginary biography of an English woman who becomes a famous painter and whose friends included Swinburne, Rossetti and Oscar Wilde. Presentation inscription on the front endpaper by the author to his father.

Charleston, S.C.: Walker, Evans & Cogswell, Co, 1913. 9.75 x 6.75", beige cloth covers with red cloth spine, gilt spine lettering, variously paginated, several sections printed in variously colored paper. Front hinge cracked, pages toned, covers worn with front cover lettering rubbed. A rare Jim-Crow era directory for the city of Charleston, South Carolina that is itself segregated in that pages 393 to 487 print a discrete directory of the city's African American population. Headed "Colored Department Walsh's Columbia City Directory 1913," this section is printed on different colored paper (orange) than the rest of the book. The publisher, William H. Walsh, began this practice in his directory of 1904-1905, making a "self-proclaimed 'radical departure in the general arrangement of the work' intended to 'enable the directory user to ascertain the necessary information with much more rapidity.' Seven issues, plus one supplement issue, of this newsletter issued by the War Service Committee of the American Library Association (ALA) during World War One. Together with a broadside issued by the ALA. The newsletters measure 8.5 x 11", and are between 4 and 20 pages each. They relate to the ALA's wartime programs to provide books and periodicals to soldiers at home and abroad. The newsletters contain information on the work of the ALA, including articles on "libraries for soldiers" they constructed in army camps. There is also much information on donating books to the cause, fundraising efforts, the results of the book campaign, as well as an article on "women and the work they do" for the ALA's war effort, and more. Birmingham, Alabama: Birmingham Publishing Company, 1949. 9 x 6", stapled booklet with cream covers and black lettering, 68 pp. A first-person account of a family of six as they toured around Europe shortly after the end of World War II. According to her obituary, Noland would have been 24 when this book was published. Though a native and life-long resident of Birmingham, Alabama, she graduated from the Foxcroft School in Virginia (founded by her Aunt Charlotte H. Noland) and then Holyoke College in Massachusets. Her writing extended to her career as a reporter and columnist for multiple newspapers in Birmingham. Light wear and foxing to edges of cover and text block edge.

Side stapled newspaper, 13 x 9", 12 pp. Scarce newspaper from the territory of Hawaii, "published weekly at Camp McKinley, in the interests of the First Regiment of Infantry, New York Volunteers." Includes camp news, articles on life in camp, a map of the island of Oahu, local advertisements, and more. Creasing, splitting to upper and lower portions of binding, several inch tear through text block.

Black cloth binding measuring 9.25 x 6", [2], 215 pp. Reminiscences of the maker of the famous Western saddle carrying his name; includes account of his trip from Denver to Virginia City, Montana, in 1864" (Howes). This copy with a lengthy inscription by the author on the half title to "my dear friend," Grace Loback of Denver. Graff 1490; Howes G32. Front hinge cracked, text and covers bowed, soiling to covers, mild toning to pages, occasional smudging to pages.

New York: Bunce and Huntington, 1865. 8vo, contemporary decorative cloth with embossed title, and gilt spine title, 218pp. Covers soiled, worn, spine ends frayed. Pages foxed, a few pages soiled and/or stained. Good. An early example of an economical cook book, intended to aid in the keeping of a properly comfortable table on a budget. "It simply aims at supplying a want often felt by the young and inexperienced mistress of a household, where moderate income, rather than position, renders economy advisable" (introduction).

Early printing with caldecott seal to dust jacket, mention of Caldecott to rear DJ flap, $3.50 price, 40-80 and 1163 codes. Foxing and soiling to covers, owner inscription to front endpaper and half title page, dust jacket toned, and foxed with tears and chips along edges, with Caldecott seal perished and name inked to front panel.

Gettysburg, Pa, 1969. Two autographed White House cards. One measures 4 x 2.5" and contains a printed message signed by Richard Nixon. The other measures 6 x 3.5" and is contains a printed message that is signed by Patricia Nixon. Together with two original mailing envelopes sent from the White House in 1969 and 1971. From the collection of a mid 19th century Pennsylvania autograph collector, Mary Macdonald, who wrote to the Nixons in those years. In nice condition.

Large 8vo, original blue cloth with gilt, 578 pp. This copy belonging to Francis Warrington Dawson, a prominent South Carolina author and diplomat, with his name gilt stamped on the front cover (he has a lengthy entry in the book). A very attractive copy with hint of wear to corners and edges, foxing to endpapers and text block edges, mild soiling to covers.
