In the tradition of Thoreau, this book chronicles Teale's daily walks from his cottage at Trail Wood in Connecticut on seven different paths and is written in dated entries; it's described as the "companion volume" to his A Naturalist Buys an Old Farm. A fine book in near fine jacket with just a touch of sunning to spine and one short tear to upper right corner of the front panel.

Addison Wesley Publishing Company, 1995. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Inscribed on the "Also by" page: "For Charles Colburn, see page 87, with best wishes, John Hanson Mitchell." Pages 87-90 detail an encounter and conversation on Hanson's 15-mile bushwack pilgrimage to Thoreau's grave with an old man on his longstanding family land along Nonset Brook in Concord, a character representative of those with deep attachments to this place. The implication of the inscription, we think, is that Charles Colburn is this man, as this book was acquired in Concord. If so, a neat book inscribed to one of its characters. NY: W.W. Norton, 1989. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. A softcover advanced uncorrected proof inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page: "For Marc -- Thanks! Sorry we missed you -- Best, Rick Bass, Oxford 1989." Uncommon for being a signed proof. We suspect Marc is another writer, but aren't sure. His third book and first book of short stories, with nice blurbs by George Plimpton and Joy Williams.  An about fine copy with trace edge wear, but we note the book does not seem quite rectangular and has offset wraps, a printer's error that adds interest in our opinion.

This book won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1996. Green is a geochemist, a professor emeritus at Miami University in Ohio, and this book shares his science and self-discovery in Antartica where he studied lakes devoid of life. Platt was the winner of the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1945 for This Green World. From the jacket: "In this fascinating volume, Rutherford Platt illustrates the immense force, beauty, and significance of this natural phenomenon [water] in the origin, development, and balance of life." With line drawings by Stanley Wyatt. An association copy, inscribed in purple ink on the half-title page: "For Oliver [Sacks]--with deep affection and admiration--Susan." Sacks and Sontag were friends and both wrote with deep sophistication about illness, one as a public intellectual and philosopher, the other as an accomplished physician. This book is a short story that originally appeared in The New Yorker which describes a group of friends after they discover a close friend has AIDS. A wide octavo or small quarto in wraps with French flaps, illustrated with fold-out color etchings by Howard Hodgkin. Thirty pages exclusive of the etchings. Uncommon signed, with no other signed copies currently available online. A well-known early, and literary, primer in ecology. As the jacket says: "[Storer] does for all of nature what Rachel Carson did for The Sea Around Us--and does it in masterly fashion." Storer was also a pioneer in slow-motion nature films, especially of birds in flight, and he served as president of the Florida Audubon Society. Quarto, gray cloth boards. Signed by Jean-Michel Cousteau, the son of Jacques Cousteau and for 20 years the executive vice president of the Cousteau Society, on the title page. Signature is vertical (rotated) on the page. Also inscribed in bold Sharpie on the title page by, it would appear, the co-author of the book, Philippe Diole: "5/17/81, To Hobye and Debbi Rogers, Philippe." That signature is somewhat difficult to decipher, and we can't find any other examples of Diole's signature. Laid in is a handsome invitation in baby blue to the Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Rogers from the Brielle Galleries in New Jersey to a 1981 reception to benefit in the Cousteau Society (where the book was signed).
