Description:
London, Elkin Mathews & John Lane; John Lane The Bodley Head, 1894-97. . First edition; 13 vols (complete), small 4to; illustrated throughout, with tissue-guards, advertisements, occasional foxing, Dutch bookseller's discreet labels to front pastedowns, minor dampstaining to lower right corner of vol. IX; publisher's pictorial yellow cloth blocked in black, spines darkened, some soiling and rubbing to covers, extremities a little bumped, light spotting to edges, offsetting to endpapers, partly unopened, overall very good. A very good, complete run of the The Yellow Book, the quarterly that for many best enshrines the spirit of the Decadent movement and the 1890s. In April 1894 The Times described it as 'A combination of English rwodyism and French lubricity'. The Yellow Book was founded in 1894 by Beardsley and his friend Henry Harland, both keen on establishing an avant-garde organ that would capture the decadent & aesthetic gasp of the fin-de-siècle. Beardsley and the artist James McNeill…

Tokyo, Asahi Sonorama, Sh wa 53 [1978]. . First edition; 8vo (199 x 209 mm, 7¾ x 8¼ in); black-and-white photographs printed in sheet-fed gravure, texts by Yamagishi Shoji in Japanese and English and Setouchi Harumi in Japanese only, minor spotting to first page; black printed paper-covered boards; photo-illustrated dust-jacket, fading to spine, light spotting to verso, minor cockling to rear panel, minor rubbing and wear to edges, near-fine in a very good dust-jacket; [120]pp. Fukase Masahisa and Yohko were married for twelve years and divorced in 1976. That summer, Fukase made a trip home from Tokyo to his family's photography studio in Hokkaido. On this trip, he found himself amidst a flock of ravens which he photographed. This encounter with the ravens, an omen of misfortune in Japan, deepened his sense of loneliness but also propelled his work in another direction. In the autumn of that year, he held an exhibition of these 'Raven' photographs at the Ginza Nikon Salon in Tokyo. This book…

Tokyo, Sokyu-Sha & Mole, 1998. . First edition, signed; 4to (278 x 230 mm, 11 x 9 in); black-and-white photographs printed in offset; photo-illustrated wrappers, fine in the publisher's near-fine cardboard slipcase with a printed label, indentation marks on the rear; [104]pp. Signed copy of Ishiuchi Miyako's Yokosuka Again 1980-1990. In 1977, Ishiuchi photographed Yokosuka, the port town in Japan where she grew up during the 1950s and '60s, returning some nine years after leaving to revisit memories from her childhood. This work was published as Yokosuka Story (1979), which hinted at the tensions arising from the United States Naval base, which came to dominate the town. The photographs in Yokosuka Again were made after the publication of Yokosuka Story and are focused more directly on the area around the Naval base, which, while hinted at, was not featured in the earlier book.

[London, [1839-43]. . Uncoloured aquatint engraving, later printing From the illustrated 'Travels in the Interior of North America between 1832-34' by Prince Maximilian Alexander Philipp Zu Wied-Neuweid, published in two volumes by Ackermmann in London 1843.The finest work on American Indian life and the American Frontier, it is the result of an epic journey which took place at a time when the mass migrations of settlers and pioneers was about to alter irrevocably the unspoiled West. Karl Bodmer (1809-1893) was engaged by Prince Maximilian (already famed for his earlier explorations in Brazil) to provide a record of his travels among the Plains Indians of North America during 1833-34. His efforts show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely thorough, accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. The most important part of their travels started from St Louis, whence they proceeded up the treacherous Missouri along the…
