In it Adams recounts in minute detail his reasoning and corresponding actions with respect to the 1799 diplomatic mission to France undertaken by his team of representatives, which eventually resulted in the Convention of 1800 or "Treaty Of Montefontaine," ending America’s Quasi-War with France, which was initiated by Talleyrand’s 1796 order allowing for the seizure of American merchant ships. Bampfylde Moore Carew was an early 18th century English beggar who, miraculously, was the central character of a story by Robert Goadby. 'Life and Adventures of Bampfylde Moore Carew' told of Carew's life in disguise, his tricks and witty behavior, life with gypsies, travels and sea voyages to America, and involvement in tobacco trades.
Based on the 1745 original version, this undated 1760 sixth edition printing is titled 'An Apology for the Life' and is still thought to be written by Goadby.

1884 1ed Confederate War Papers General Gustv Smith Battle Seven Pines Civil War

Gustavus Woodward Smith was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, best remembered for his role in the Battle of Seven Pines. When General Joseph Johnson was injured, Smith took over the commanding role until his health deteriorated and Robert E. Lee ultimately took over.
Following the war, Smith published a memoir of his experience in the war. 'Confederate War Papers' covers topics including Jefferson Davis's presidential election, battle tactics and maneuvers, Confederate defenses and forts, and much emphasis on the Battle of Seven Pines. However, according to Nevins,
"Smith was a failure as a general; this work is largely his rationalization for shortcomings at Seven Pines."
