ILLUSTRATED MONOGRAPH ON THE ANATOMY OF THE OPOSSUM BY LEADING 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN ZOOLOGISTS.

12 inches tall red cloth binding, gilt title to spine, bookplates of C. William Beebe on front and rear paste-downs, original printed paper covers bound in, text paginated pp 41-154, 36 wood engravings in the text, very good.

ELLIOTT COUES (1842 - 1899) was an American army surgeon, historian, ornithologist and author. He graduated at Columbian University, (now, George Washington University) Washington, D.C., in 1861, and at the Medical school of that institution in 1863. He served as a medical cadet in Washington in 1862-1863, and in 1864 was appointed assistant-surgeon in the regular army. In 1872 he published his Key to North American Birds, which, revised and rewritten in 1884 and 1901, did much to promote the systematic study of ornithology in America. He was a founding member of the American Ornithologists' Union in 1883. His work was instrumental in establishing the currently accepted standards of trinomial nomenclature - the taxonomic classification of subspecies - in ornithology, and ultimately the whole of zoology. In 1873-1876 Coues was attached as surgeon and naturalist to the United States Northern Boundary Commission, and in 1876-1880 was secretary and naturalist to the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, the publications of which he edited. He was lecturer on anatomy in the medical school of the Columbian University in 1877-1882, and professor of anatomy there in 1882-1887. In addition to ornithology he did valuable work in mammalogy; his book Fur-Bearing Animals (1877) being distinguished by the accuracy and completeness of its description of species, several of which were already becoming rare. Odocoileus virginianus couesi, the Coues white-tailed deer is named after him.

JEFFRIES WYMAN (1814 - 1874) was an American naturalist and anatomist, born in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1833 and Harvard Medical School in 1837. He was made curator at Lowell Institute, Boston, in 1839 and remained affiliated there until 1842. Fees from Lowell Institute lectures enabled him to study in Europe, from 1841-1842, where he had the opportunity to study under anatomist Richard Owen in London. Upon his return to the United States, he had hoped to gain a professorship at Harvard College but the position went to Asa Gray. In 1843, he was elected professor of anatomy and physiology at Hampden-Sydney College, Richmond, Virginia. In 1847 he became Hersey Professor of Anatomy at Harvard College, where he remained until his death, becoming the first curator of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology there in 1866. He made extensive and valuable collections in comparative anatomy and archæology, and he published nearly 70 scientific papers. He was the president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1858. At Harvard, his colleagues included Oliver Wendell Holmes, Asa Gray, and Louis Agassiz. When On the Origin of Species was published in 1859, Wyman's one-time mentor, Richard Owen came out against the book, while his colleague Asa Gray supported it. In 1860, Darwin went to Gray to enlist Wyman's support due to Wyman's work on higher apes and anatomy. Wyman wrote to Darwin agreeing that "progressive development is a far more probable theory than progressive creations", and the two men corresponded between 1860 and 1866, with Darwin writing at one point "I know hardly anyone whose opinions I should be more inclined to defer to."

PROVENANCE: WILLIAM BEEBE (1877 - 1962) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist, explorer, and author. He is remembered for the numerous expeditions he conducted for the New York Zoological Society, his deep dives in the Bathysphere, and his prolific scientific writing for both academic and popular audiences.

Description:
GAGGIN, E.R. Jolly Animals. With Illustrations by Keith Ward. NY: Rand McNally [1930]. 4to, 111pp. Grey cloth with spine stamped in black and color pictorial label affixed to the front. Pictorial endpapers in green ink; 7 full-page color illustrations and smaller illustrations on every other spread, alternating between full color and b&w. Spine ends and corners a bit worn, edges a bit rubbed, some light soiling and stains to front cover, minute traces of hand-soiling in a few page margins, else an internally clean, tight copy.
First edition. A collection of humorous stories about a group of anthropomorphic animals who find themselves in delightfully strange situations. The charming illustration of Keith Ward (best known as a commercial illustrator who created Borden's Elsie the Cow as well as the 1940 editions of Dick and Jane) are reminiscent of the work of Harrison Cady and capture the brightness and levity of these amusing tales.
