About This Item
Lucca: Leonardi Venturini 1756-1757, 1756. Hardcover. See Description. Revised and extended edition. Tall folios. 4 volumes. Volume I., pp. [12], xciv, [2], 546. Volume II., pp. [2], 559, [1]. Volume III., pp. [2], 557, [1]. Volume IV., pp. [2], 520. Double column text in Latin. With 21 full page illustrations (mostly in volume II) depicting maps, floor plans, architecture, clothing and religious objects described in the Hebrew Scriptures. Several illustrations are also included with the text. The title page to volume I is printed in red and black, and displays a vignette.
Bound in full period vellum showing rubbing and wear. Spine caps and areas along the board edges are carefully restored. Interior pages show general wear and stress. A few minor marginal tears are neatly sealed. A very faint diagonal stress line (not a full crease) appears in the upper quarter of the leaves; as if, at some period, the text blocks had been bent. Age-toning/browning, scattered foxing and periodic uniform tanning/browning are all present. End leaves are foxed and ragged; an old name and date (1760) is located on the front free fly-leaves. These volumes were released from the Andover-Newton Theological Institute. The title pages are marked with institutional stamps. A stamp is present in the lower margin of 2-3 text pages per volume. The bottom edge of the book block is also stamped. Library bookplates are present on the inside front covers. Agostino Tornielli (1543-1622) was a religious historian who eventually became master of the Society of Barnabites. His "Annales" (first published 1609-10) were written as a prequel to Baroniuss massive (12 volume) ecclesiastical history. Tornielli discusses historical events from the beginning of the world till the time of Jesus. His work was considered valuable for shining light on obscure areas of chronology, geography and topography especially in relation to the books of the Jewish Testament. Louis Dupin states that "it is written in a simple and natural style with great sharpness." [See Dupin, Nouv. bibl. des auteurs eccles. Vol. XVII, p. 58]. This edition of 1756-57 contains an extensive commentary by Agostino Maria Negri. This is a heavy set; extra shipping costs will be necessary. [Graesse I, p. 296 (under Baronius); Brunet I, 663 (under Baronius); Durling, Cyclopaedia Bibliographica 2967-2968].
