About This Item

Dublin: Gilbert and Hodges, 1804. Leather. Good. 7" by 4". None. A scarce Dublin edition of one of the most popular and reprinted cookery books of all time. A new Dublin edition.'The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy' is a prominent cookery book that became a bestseller for a century after its publication in 1747. It dominated the English speaking market, and gave the author, Hannah Glasse, much fame. The popularity of the work was international, with the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin even owning copies, with its popularity surviving the American War of Independence. The work includes one of the first recipes in English for an Indian style curry, and was also the first book to mention a recipe for trifle using jelly as an ingredient, as well as being the first to use the term 'Yorkshire pudding' in print. Glasse also makes use of many imported ingredients, such as cocoa, cinamon, pistachios, and nutmeg.Hannah Glasse was best known for this work, which was originally published anonymously under the tag 'by a lady'. Though she published other works, none were as popular as 'The Art of Cookery'.Collated, complete. In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. Joints are starting but firm. Light bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine, and to the head of the rear joint. Front hinge is starting but firm, rear hinge is strained. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the rear free endpaper, with pencil drawings to the front free endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound, pages 3 to 22 are working loose. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Good

Synopsis

First published in England in 1747, the Art of Cookery was the first cookbook not written primarily for chefs or aristocrats, making it a bestseller during its time and bringing wealth to the author, first noted as only 'a Lady.' The author, Hannah Glasse, was raised in a wealthy household but lost her means after the death of her father, and wrote the cookbook as a means of providing for her family, which included 10 children, only five of whom survived infancy. The 'plain and easy' recipes, 972 in all, were relatively cheap and technically simple, including the first mention of jelly, Yorkshire pudding, and also included recipes for Indian curries.
