About This Item
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1961. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near fine/near fine. Signed first edition of the final autobiography written by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.. Octavo, xix, 454pp. Full blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. Illustrated endpapers. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page with "H-L" code listed. Solid text block, touch of wear to corners and edges, a near fine example. In the publisher's dust jacket, $6.95 retail price on front flap, light rubbing to extremities, a few short closed tears to top edge. A bright, near fine example. Signed by the author on the half-title. The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt serves as the conclusion to the narrative previously told through This is My Story (1937), This I Remember (1949), and On My Own (1958). Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) redefined the role of the First Lady, traveling with her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to meet world leaders and support civil rights movements. After FDR's passing in 1945, she continued her public service as a United Nations delegate, chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, and a Democratic Party activist. This book contains passages from her three previous works, as well as new material on her second visit to Russia and the Democratic Convention of 1960. A beautiful copy with a very rare signature, since the book was published just one year before her passing in 1962.
