Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1952. Printed at The Riverside Press. First Edition. Hardcover. Thin quarto. 9.25 x 6.25 inches. 122 pages. Very Good+. Lacking dust jacket. Illustrated by Lisl Weil. Yellow cloth on board. Green lettering and illustration on front board, with green lettering on spine. Binding tight and square. Case very lightly soiled with bottom edges of both lower tips rubbed through (no bumping). Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, else clean and unmarked throughout. Some pages age toned. Upper corners dog-eared on pages 87/88 and 89/90. This extremely rare children's book, printed at The Riverside Press, was written by renowned American historian Henry Steele Commager, who helped define modern liberalism in the United States with 40 books and 700 essays and reviews, and illustrated by Lisl Weil, an Austrian-American graphic artist associated with the Zinkenbacher Malerkolonie.
