Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

Integral publishers advert leaves at the end of each volume (iii, i, ii) but bound without the publishers catalogue in volume one. Some minor foxing to a few pages but generally a very good clean copy finely re-bound by Bayntun of Bath. Half brown morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. Loosely inserted is a 4pp hand written letter from the author (" Your affectionate Dinah") to "My Dear Alice" ( her God Daughter, the subject of the poem "My Godchild Alice"), closely written in black ink on four sides of folded leaf, each side measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches. Bound in contemporary or early dark green cloth, smooth spine, lettered in gilt between gilt double fillets, glazed yellow endleaves, sprinkled edges. The first separate edition of "Sense and Sensibility" to be published after the expiration of the copyright in 1839. With the half-title. Small chip to blank head of title-page and first page of text. A fine copy. Ink signature of Alice Vernon Harcourt (1845-1919) on front endleaf and book label of John Jordan (no.22). Scarce.

Macmillan & Co. New York. 1889. New edition. 12mo. (7.5 x 5.2 inches). xii, 192, 12 pp publishers catalogue. Also an extra gathering bound in so that pages 117 to 124 appear twice. One gathering slightly sprung. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt and black decorative band across the top of the front board and the top and bottom of the spine. Black decorative roll to the bottom of the front board. Title on gilt to the middle of the front board. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Rear board with blind stamped floral roll to the top and bottom. Floral decorative endpapers. Neat two line inscription to the front free endpaper. The rear endpapers have an early previous owner's name and address written in red crayon to the free endpaper and a few short lines to the pastedown. Paris: Hetzel, 1865 First illustrated Edition of the first Jules Verne book in french. Publisher: Hetzel Paris. No date (1865). Size: 8°, 370 pages + 2 pages advertisememts and 32 pages 'Magasin D'Education Et De Recreation'. Separated Attachment 'Carte de l'Afrique Centrale' is unfortunately missing (the map of Africa was not printed throughout the text like in later editions). Contemporary half maroquin with gilt quarters on spine and gilt edges. One frontispiece (with tissue) and 23 fullpage illustrations(with tissues) and several small illustrations throughout the text. Illustrators: Édouard Riou and Henri de Montaut.
Book is in very good condition with a little bumping to the corners and little rubbing to the edges of the boards and the spine. Front free endpaper has been torn in the middle. The pages are bright and clean but some have little foxing.This is an extremly attractive and scarce edition of Jules Verne's first book.
