About This Item
This is a 1926 edition of 20 etchings by French artist Charles Meyron (1821–1868). Meryon was celebrated among artists and collectors alike during the nineteenth century for his etched depictions of Paris. This series of his Parisian views were inspired by the novels and poetry of Victor Hugo.
Number 38 out of a limited edition of 636. Includes Meyron's original cover etching for the 1852 edition on the front board. Includes a portrait of Meyron by Félix Bracquemond, and Meyron's well-known etching "Le Stryge," often translated as "The Vampire," which shows the famous chimera perched on the balustrade of the gallery of Notre-Dame Cathedral against an aerial view of the expanding French capital.
An remarkable artistic document of old Paris prior its modernization. With a biographical essay by R. Cantinelli and a separate folder of notes on the etchings, all in French. Overall good condition with etched plates VG (several have moderate foxing). 20 plates are matted and contained in a folder attached to rear board. Front board not attached. See images for a better idea of condition. Additional images available upon request.
