Beautiful fuchsia cloth boards with a full-page teal/fuchsia pastedown, are in very good condition with only a small blemish (upper left corner) and some smudges to the rear board. No edge wear to the boards or the spine. Corners show slight bumping and wear. There are some smudges to the pastedown and light rubbing around the edges. The spine is tight, boards are firmly attached with no cracking to the decorative map endpapers. Text block is solid. Age tanning throughout. Previous owner name on the book ownership page. Includes twelve beautiful black and white illustrations by the author and with sketches by Mr. Doll. The book was a Newbery runner-up. Some smudges to the interior pages but otherwise pages are in good condition with no markings, chips, or cracks.
Anne Parrish (1888 – 1957) was born into a family of artist – her father was Thomas Clarkson Parrish an etcher from Philadelphia, her mother (Anne Lodge) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, her younger brother was also illustrator-writer Dillwyn Parrish and her distant cousin was the famous painter Maxfield Parrish - and she herself went on to be a novelist and writer of children's book. She was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal three times from 1925 to 1951. Her first book was published in 1923 and her last in 1951 leaving a rich portfolio of twenty books over her lifetime.
