About This Item
Paris: L'Abbaye, 1960. Very Good. 1 card (10.4 x 13.8 cm.), folded (10.4 x 7 cm.). Printed in dark brown: "Entre le clocher de St. Germain des Prés et la place de Furstemberg l'Abbaye bar Anglais." Drawings on the front of St. Germain des Prés and inside of place de Furstemberg, with the cafe's address and phone number. Gordon Heath's signature is in blue ink on the left inside page. American actor Gordon Heath (1918-1991) came to prominence in 1945 in Elia Kazan's play Deep are the Roots, about the return of a black GI after WWII to the Jim Crow South. In 1948 he decided to make Paris his home; he continued on the stage in Paris and London. With his life-partner, Leroy Payant, he also operated the Cafe de L'Abbaye in Paris from 1949 until Payant's death in 1976. Undated. The phone number uses 3 letters and 4 numbers; this system was replaced by an all-number system in 1963. In Very Good Condition: not folded exactly square; slightly creased and very lightly soiled.
