Amy Tan, often compared to the Native American writer Louise Erdrich, drew inspiration from Erdrich's "Love Medicine" while forming the basis of her first novel. Tan adhered to the advice of fellow writer Amy Hepel, who encouraged authors to explore uncomfortable themes. A pivotal event solidified Tan's commitment to writing. In a 1989 article by Gayle Feldman, Tan recounted the moment she rushed to the hospital, fearing her mother had suffered a heart attack. Her mother, recognizing Tan's limited knowledge of their Chinese heritage, posed a poignant question: "If I die, what would you remember?" Although her mother ultimately recovered, Tan vowed to learn everything about her Chinese roots. The dedication in her book reflects this promise.

Tan described her writing process as magical. She would light incense, play specific music, and immerse herself in an alternate world. Hours would slip away as she conjured characters and their stories. Word of mouth, critical acclaim, and the support of independent bookstores propelled this genuine modern classic to its well-deserved status. Tan's Chinese name, "Anmei," translates to "a blessing from America."

Amy Tan will be on tour in 2024 for her new book, "The Backyard Bird Chronicles" and will be featured in the Portland Arts & Lecture series in 2024/2025. She has stated that her mother was "enormously proud" of "The Joy Luck Club.
