In 1891-1894 the hotel held the Magnolia Springs Open men's and women's hard cement court tennis tournament. The tournament was an official sanctioned event of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association.
Information on the springs and the health benefits from its water
Northern tourists who descended on Green Cove Springs during the annual winter migrations of the late 1800s would arrive from Jacksonville and take a boat trip south on the St. Johns River. Along the way marveling at the giant live oak trees draping moss into the water.
Arriving at the grand Magnolia Springs Hotel just north of Green Cove Springs nestled in the posh surroundings with the latest innovations of elevator, intercoms to summon liveried servants and both gas and electric lighting. The ladies became less disapproving. Afternoon tea would be served in the lavishly decorated lounge amidst oriental rugs, European landscape paintings, fellow guests would diplomats, congressmen and even an Italian opera star.

Description:
ca. 1935. Very Good. Printed bill, 35 x 50 cm. Blue ink on paper. Restored and laid down. The propaganda war against Francos forces in Spain was fought largely with posters. These were pasted up on walls in the night at great risk not only to those putting them up, but to the printers, artists, and organizers, too. The Socorro Rojo Internacional (S.R.I.), a creation of the Communist International Congress of 1922, was intended to function as a support and aid organization (providing soup kitchens, medical care, etc.) but also propagandized energetically. This poster declares War unto Death! To the provocateur, the spy, to anyone who sows discontent and fear. Lets end the Fifth Column. The little figure is composed of multiple eyes and antennae, keeping watch and listening. Such posters were willfully destroyed, and surviving examples are rare.

Paginates: wraps, blanks, 48. Illustrations included in pagination. Complete as issued. This edition is uncommon. WorldCat locates ~15 copies. See OCLC: 34635134 & 22449258; Rosenbach 681. NP. 1926 - 1972. A magnificent archive of stage performers 'Bobby and Evelyn' who performed as clowns. (11 x 8.3 inches). There are over 150 items, stuck neatly into a large folder, the spine of which is now breaking. Comprising: 24 real mono photographs (12 from the Clown act and 12 from a Luton Grammar School gymnastic display which was choreographed by Squire), One large poster, circa 40 letters and telegrams, circa 60 programmes and show bills, circa 25 newspaper cuttings. The earliest items here are a photo dated 1926 and a flyer from 1928, and the latest seems to be 1972 on a large poster from Girvan. Working for the most part as Clown Bobby and Evelyn, His real name was Robert Squire, hers was Evelyn Wrensted. The couple performed across the country at fetes, fairs, concert parties and on the music hall and end of pier circuit for almost fifty years. This is the unique personal record of their career, from booking confirmations and programmes to photographs, letters of thanks and newspaper coverage.

[Civil War]. [Reconstruction]. [North Carolina]."The triumphant North demanded three things of the defeated South: acknowledgment of the emancipation of its slaves; contract freedom for all citizens, black and white; and national reunification. Emancipation, freedom, and reunification were still just words. Their meanings remained unfixed. The image of the new country would emerge only as the lines connecting these ideological dots were drawn. As former North Carolina governor David L. Swain recognized, 'With reference to emancipation, we are at the beginning of the War.'" [Richard White. "The Republic For Which It Stands."]OFFICE OF THE PROVOST MARSHALL, NORTH CAROLINA. London: Bemrose & Sons , 1881. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" X 8.5. 39pp., A classic study on the origins of place names in the English county of Derbyshire. This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire. Please note that this is a 19th century produced copy and not a modern reproduction. All orders processed and shipped promptly from the UK, usually within 24 hours.
